Christos Pouloglou, 33, lost a collection of 22-carat gold coins from his room on the 21st floor after going out to dinner with his wife. He is the owner of SV Collectors in Athens. The estimated value of the collection of coins - including solid gold sovereigns dating back to the Victorian era - is £500,000. Some of the coins were on consignment, and he’ll have to pay the owners. Apparently, the thieves couldn’t break-in on their own, so tricked a maid into letting them in with a forgotten key excuse. Seems like the Hilton should be responsible. See link for more info. Cal https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/uknew...-claims-raiders-nicked-collection-from-hotel/
Wow, I had no idea they were reproducing old sovereigns. PS: Inside job? No insurance? Left in a hotel room?
I guess Hilton should be responsible, even though it was the maid’s poor judgment. Maybe that should be an interview question: “If someone loses their room key, what do you do?” Really sucks for the coin dealer. I could imagine all the extra work he is doing with insurance and everything right now.
Likely will end up in Russia & Brazil were several 1964-D Peace Dollars are (the ones given to soviet diplomats) or the 1933 Double Eagles given to several world leaders like in Brazil & Argentina. We will never know... the upper stolen art world rarely tells on it's self and owners know it would put them on a U.S. Financial hit list to ruin them. well connected dealers like this have lots of friends in high places. IMO these coins stolen will not be seen again for a hundred years or more.
OK here we go. First comes expressions of concern for the victem. That quickly morphs into skeptism, and questions of personal security, and then eventually an attack on the character of the victem. So get it straight. The reason why this guy was robbed was because there were criminals that wanted to steal his coins so that OTHER criminals can buy them and then push them back on the market. The person who is robbed is the victem and they are 100% innocent.
Or they can just bring them to a pawn shop and in 30 days they can just sell them in the window or push them on ebay.
actually they do, and eyes are everywhere. High art that is stolen ends up with gansters who are hiding it from the market, not collectors. That Russel Crow movie BS is BS.

More common raw coins can probably be sold as is or certified and sold without being noticed, especially if sold over time and via multiple venues. The more common, certified issues can probably be cracked out and re-certified without being noticed … especially if the thieves use a TPG other than the original. Rarer coins may be melted and sold as bullion. That’s what happened to the giant gold maple leaf that was stolen in Germany a while back. Supposedly, the melt value of the entire group is over $30K, which is not a bad payday for the thieves. Getting away with fencing the coins depends on how smart and patient the thieves are. I haven’t heard whether there was any insurance coverage of the coins on the part of the dealer. He claims he’s ruined, which implies not. There is CCTV of the thieves. Unless folks believe the thieves were working for the dealer, he was insured and it’s an insurance scam, the theft appears real. I would hold back suspicions unless he applies for a sizeable insurance payment, and even that is not evidence that he was involved. Even if it is an insurance scam, the dealer would be faced with how to dispose of the rarer coins for which there are detailed photographs. Cal
Nothings official so nothing to verify not even the PCGS bounty can get a public peek at them. But they are out in the wild. we all know the 1933 is not the only one in the wild even the government admitted that fact long ago its just the only legal one.
You have a funny viewpoint on the ultra rich they have eyes watching them everywhere? good for them they can hide in a 100 million dollar home surrounded by 100 acres. Life's not a Russell crow movie. I don't watch Hollywood movies myself as I get older I'm trying to keep what braincells I have left.
