    Hello,

I am looking for the auction catalog 12 published in 2003 by Antiqua - California firm that was active in the 90s and 20s. Does anyone have a copy or could post a photo of lot 124 if possible?

    Thanks a lot!

with all due respect if your coin is in Naville 11, why do you care about the Antiqua catalog?

Not sure if you meant catalog XVII that you illustrated in your post, or catalog XII, so I've included both.

Congratulations on that cistophorus. I was either your direct underbidder or one bid below; it's one of the nicest examples of the type and I regretted not pushing higher: the rest of the Gasvoda collection was comparatively far more expensive.

Thank you very much for your contribution. Apologies for the confusion - it was catalog 12 - lot 124 that was of interest.
Does it say anything in the foreword or introduction of the catalog about the provenance of lot 124 by the way?

I have also found a earlier sale for this coin:
Numismatics Fine Arts Auction 14 lot 306 from Nov.29th 1984.
I cant seem to find the catalog - do you happen to have a copy of that too?

Actually found it - the description did not have any provenance information.

I assume you are referring to the NAC 86 sale from 2015. Yes, its a wonderful coin, although not mine.

    Hello,
I assume you are referring to the lot-description of its most recent sale in NAC 86 lot 47 from 2015 which stated Ex: Naville XI, 1925, Levis 211 and Antiqua sale 12, 2003?

I care about the Antiqua-sale, which now is confirmed by the catalog screen-shot above by @IdesOfMarch01, because I can't find the coin in Naville XI lot 211 from 1925 or in any other lot from that sale or any other Naville sales before or earlier.

From Naville XI 1925 you can see lot 211 to the upper right section of this page:

Below the lot description of 211:

...and lot 211 is certainly not the Augustus cistophorus with the Sphinx reverse show in the Antiqua 12 lot 124 and NFA 14 lot 306.

A wrong provenance given in an auction catalog? I am shocked :)

Glad that I could be of help!

And no, there is no additional information about this coin anywhere in the catalog. Sorry.

Thats what I found too. So to summarize, the coin in question, has to my knowledge appeared in the following sales:

What I don't understand is why NAC referred to the 1925 Naville sale.

Very strange indeed. It might be worth checking adjacent Naville sales in case they typed the wrong number. I'll take a look later today in a few I have on-hand.

Also, can't hurt to ask: if you're perhaps working on a census of Sphinx cistophorii, I'd appreciate it if you would let me know if you happen to track down an earlier pedigree for mine.

At the moment, I'm aware of the following pedigree:

Ex Slg. René Baron. Ex M&M Basel 68, 1986, lot 352. Ex Credit de la Bourse, Paris, Liste 1991 lot 217

Not an earlier pedigree than what you already have, but your coin was also sold by Tradart, December 2014 Auction, lot 237.

If the photo is not fooling me, I believe that there are some light green residues of material someone used to create an imprint of your coin.
