Went out for lunch and left this tip for the waiter: 2 $2 bills 2 2001 Sacagawea dollar coins If you were the waiter picking up the tip, what would your initial reaction be? (no smart remarks about leaving a bad tip)
I love doing stuff like that. I don't know if they like it or not, but I like using $2 bills, dollar coins and the like.
If he or she was a collector I would assume they appreciated it, if they weren't I imagine they went to the register and traded it out for singles.
Depends on the waiter. I'll still occasionally leave silver certificates or red seal $5 as a tip...sorta fun to put them back in circulation. Have no idea whether the waiter/waitress appreciates it or thinks I'm passing fake money.
Personally I'd think "Meh, thanks for the cash." Then again, I've tipped with $2 bills lots of times, and almost universally got a positive reaction.
I was a server for over 25 years...and have recieved tips like that... loved it! It is the pamphlets people leave telling you to turn your life over,..that we all are sinners...why do they leave those for servers all the time? lol Do I look like I am going to hell?, I mean, do they pass them out everywhere? Do they put them in the offering plate at church? lol
I tended bar for a couple of years during college. Tips were plentiful but rarely interesting. Occasionally, people would give me a $2, or some origami folded note or pass off some foreign note or coin. With my interest in numismatics, I'd smile and tell them I didn't mind, which I didn't, though I needed the cash to spend more so at the time than any novelty foreign piece. Besides an average circulated coin or note wasn't going to do much for either my finances nor collection of coins/notes. At times the embarassed smirk of the tipper leaving a foreign coin or note was kind of like getting no tip at all. I'm surprized illini420 hasn't chimed in here yet, he often posts about his "trifecta" tipping.
I hope your wait staff liked it and took it as something special. Personally I don't know why ppl always ask, "well how much was the tab"? The point is they're getting something special from a customer who appreciated the service. Besides they're already getting an hourly wage!! just kidding of course!!
Most waiters have never seen the kind of money we come across!! I think most would think it very odd, indeed!!
As long as we're on the subject, why has the suggested tip amount that I see on many restaurant bills gone up over the years from 15% to 18%-20%? I used to wait tables when I was (much) younger and always expected 15% for good service. What, is it further from the kitchen now? Is the food heavier? What?
Generally a good rule thumb is tip what the tax on the bill is, You will be Close in most states, What get,s me is most people tip regardless of Service REMEMBER a tip is for good service!!! Lousy service lousy Or no tip!!
In NYC you can pay for a taxi with a credit card. It took forever to get the majority of the fleet outfitted with the card reader devices. The drivers balked about how it would loose them tips accepting cards. However, when you get the little screen on the in-cab entertainment TV that displays the fare, you are presented with three suggested tip increments: 18%, 20%, 25%. I have even seen some set up to prompt you with: 20%, 25%, 30%. Of course you can enter your own amount manually (takes time to type that in, so most don't if in a hurry) or you can leave no tip if necessary.
Very true Krispy...To insure prompt service. It also includes good service...Most people do not realize that servers make 2.99 and hour plustips. the hourly wage covers your taxes. Some days you leave with ten dollars...some fifty and then there are those hundred and fifty dollar days..most of those are doubles. I used to joke about some of the folks that would come in and gripe....It would be funny to watch them try and do it. I loved it! I miss it...yet, nothing will ever compare to thelast two years I have had to spend with my little girl. Who knows, maybe one day I will have my own restaurant...maybe I will call it Lincoln's logs...hmmmm I dunno...
Must have been a good Lunch! 2+2+2= an even #. Odd would be $1, more or less. Last night we left 6 Zac Taylors. This, being an ethnic food provider, is fun as sometimes they bite the tip when they see "gold". But Wifely intervention pointed out we did get good service as the fellow asked me three times if I wanted another beer....and he did bring me extra napkins. When I did my stint in the same position in life I was happy to get ANY tip, let alone 10%. Compensation for that (job was just off campus so the expectations were low and the menu was a choice from three on taps and a chilli dog with or without)~ BUT we got included, according to the boss, all the draft beer we could drink and still make change. He pointed out the "Draft" part (and this was back where there was such a thing) when he caught me grabbing a Beck's from the VIP visiting Professor stash. So to answer the original question~ Patron either found a hot chick that distracted him won at the track (the place was named "The Paddock") or forgot his change.
So, I'm supposed to pay an extra 2% in tips because my governor and state legislature just raised sales taxes? Not to mention increasing the minimum coin/bullion purchase amount needed to escape sales tax from $1,000 to $1,500.
In short, yes. If the service warrants it of course. That's the quick rule of thumb. Keep in mind that your server's taxes were increased too. -LTB
