OK so if it is a 6 or a 7 is it worth anything more? I understand it may have been cleaned in the past.

No local coin shop near me is going to know anything about this coin.

Some people here think its a rare error or hard to find I think they said it was a B-7, R-6 and some in vf are going for close to 5k.

 

If it is a B-7, which I leans towards - I would get it slabbed(no gaurantee on the variety). There is no guarantee on the money it would bring. I would check the three tpgs to see which would attribute it. I did not check the cherry pickters guide and I do not hold to the numbers in it. At times they look like estimates or best guesses. Just my humble opinion.

I haven't taken the time to attribute the OP coin, so I don't know if it's a B-7 r.6 or not.

I do know that Dick Osburn has an 1831 B-7 r.6 listed on his website. It's a G-4 and is offered at $4900.

His notes :

"An extremely rare variety. The finest listed in the JRCS census is VF. Nicer than the Reiver coin, which to my knowledge is the last example sold"

"A nice coin. The only barely notable marks are some faint slide marks on the upper reverse from life in an album, and a faint line of residue, possibly from tape, crossing the lower reverse "

I also notice he seperately lists an 1831/1 B-5 r.2; VF25, $195.

So the crux issue is obvious - get a book and attribute this coin. Find out with no confusion exactly what it is. There's a huge swing in value.

 

"Knowing" about it is as simple as consulting an attribution book; two were recommended earlier on this thread.

Knowing about this coin is easy. Marketing it is a different matter altogether.

There is a very specialized market for coins like this; there are very few folks who collect Bust 25c by die variety. You'll need to work through those channels if you choose to sell.

 

All three majors will attribute this coin by Browning number.

 

I would attribute this yourself with certainty before sending it in. Why ?

Because it's not worth submitting unless it truly is a rare variety.

Always hard to tell from photos, but the coin appears cleaned. A cleaned VF / XF 1831 25c is not worth submitting if it's a common variety.
