So on Friday last week, I finally decided I would get back to CRHing. I hadn't done it for a few months, mostly because my bank stopped giving coins to non-businesses. On Friday, the news was the same, but I was determined. I had built up a good amount of money I could spend on coins, I was shooting for a box of nickels and two of pennies. I had to go to every bank in town, but I got my nickels. Nowhere was willing to give me any pennies. This is all because of a "Coin Shortage" which I have heard nothing about since late 2020. I don't have enough expendable income to keep multiple accounts at different banks, hoping they'll give me coin. The Wells Fargo used to be pretty good about giving me coins, but their policy changed or something so I'll need an account. Might be able to open a bare bones account there just to get coins, and deposit them at my original bank. Probably going to open an account at Wells Fargo where I can deposit my nickels into an account and every so often add funds and get coins. Might work out well, who knows. Advice would be appreciated. At any rate, I'm happy to get back in the game even if it's just one box. I've already found 5 pre-50's nickels, one of them being a '39. So I've got three banks that I know give good coins, those being the Community Bank, Wells Fargo, and my local bank.

Be careful with WF. Besides just being an overall trash company towards their customers, they charge a lot of fees to have accounts open with them. If you are planning on using it solely for dumping you may want to reconsider. The monthly fees would probably eat away anything you had in there pretty fast.

Are there no credit unions around that you could become a member of?

Thanks for the input. There is a credit union in town, I'll have to check out their website and see how they are in terms of giving/receiving coins from customers. If Wells Fargo is no longer an option, maybe the US Bank here might be a better option if the Credit Union doesn't work out, but given what I've heard here before a Credit Union may be the best option.

Banks are garbage. You are nothing but a money making machine for them. They will not do anything to help you.
Credit Unions - you are a member. They are way better in pretty much every aspect. I'm a member of 2 CU's and they are both amazing in regards to my CRH habit...I mean hobby...I can quit any time I want.

I'm not a business but my bank has never turned me down. I guess it depends on the bank and whether you do business with them or not. Just my opinion. Good luck

I started my banking with a North Carolina Bank (NCNB). I was in the Army then and they gave me free banking due to my Military Service. However, when I got out, I lost all of my banking with NCNB. My car was a 1968 Rambler that had absolutely no accessories, i.e. air conditioning. My 6 month old daughter had some breathing problems and her pediatrician recommended that I get a car with A/C. I traded my 1968 Rambler for a 1970 Mercury Monterey. Luckily, a cousin of my wife worked at the dealership and I got a great deal. It had Air, Tilt Wheel, a 390 engine, and much more. I worked at a convenience store and got off at 11P and drove home. There was a dip in the road and I was "flying" home at 95 MPH. My wife's father lived on the road and I had to pass his home to get to our home. As I mentioned, I was "flying" home and passed an NC HP. I saw him in my rear view mirror turning around. I had to go around a curve and it put me out of sight to the NC HP. I turned into my father-in-laws driveway and behind the house, turning all the lights in the car. The NC HP went up and down that road looking for me, but, to no avail. I never, ever did that again.
Anyway, when I bought the Mercury, I financed it with Wachovia. Because I started to school at our local Community College, they gave me free banking. After the Mercury was paid for, I was able to join the North Carolina State Employees Credit Union. As long as I kept a balance of $100, I had access to other services. That was in 1972. I am still banking with them. Many of the tellers were high school students at the school she was teaching and they got to know me. Her worse visit to the credit union was when one of the tellers told the other tellers, "This was my high school English teacher and she taught my grandmother. She retired at the end of that school year.
My wife and I have lived long enough and in a small community, most people know us well enough to call us by name... Mr. and Mrs. not Jim and Lavella. We're in the south and no one calls older people by their first name.
By the way, I closed my Safe Deposit Boxes because the cost increased.
Check on the credit unions in your area for their services. You may be surprised.

Aside from credit unions, locally owned banks are good to deal with. The board actually works at my local bank, so decisions are fast and getting to know the big cheese can reap rewards.

Are you a regular customer at any convenience stores? I spent a few years managing them and ordered coins weekly. I would not have any problem ordering an extra box of pennies or nickels for a customer, as long as they could pay for them. The problem you would run into, though, is you can't control whether they are customer-wrapped, or new from the mint.

I second, third, and fourth the CU option. Mine is great, and will give me coins, unless they literally don't have any (which is rare). Sometimes I'll even get boxes, and they will order boxes for me too. Plus there's several branches around so I don't have to buy and dump at the same one - I'm an equal-opportunity customer.

Dont have any of those around,I wish. All we have are wells fargo and SunTrust. Basically I have to dump my coins at the banks i go to.Because of the coin shortage I can't simply drop them off at another and do cash i have to bring the coins in.So I have no specific dump bank there all dump and CRH.Do you ever have problems at your credit unions?.

Nope. They all love me. I have all the tellers bought off anyway, like I say, they call me when the goodies cross the counter. Silver dollars in the past, real ones, red seal and blue seal paper money, etc. etc. etc. One teller in one of the branches has a bit of a coin collecting habit and I horse trade with her.

I've only had a problem with one particular manager of one branch. She is just an unpleasant person. To be fair, her branch is in a location with quite a few loud obnoxious customers so that probably has something to do with it. But if you are in customer service, it would probably be in your best interest to not look like you are a hair's breadth away from punching your clientele in the face.

The branch I go to now is amazing. Everyone from the newest teller to the branch manager are super friendly and are more than willing to order stuff for me. They even hold onto things they think I may be interested in. I absolutely love them.
