From James Ricks at Atlas Numismatic. The very elusive 1864-R Guatemala 8 Pesos. Mintage of 474, with maybe 30 or 40 known survivors. AU58: Pop-3/1 finer in MS62 at NGC. PCGS has seen only one coin, an AU53.

There are two different series with this same portrait, some with the inclusion in the obverse legend "FUNDADOR". They also used different alloys, the 5, 10 and 20 Peso are in 0.900 fine while the rest are 0.875 fine, including the 4 Reales, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Peso. There is also a 16 Peso with the portrait left.

A real cool series with virtually no surviving specimens in uncirculated. The best a collector is likely to do is choice AU. But with the obsession on collecting only uncirculated coins so pervasive in the hobby now days, it means these can be acquired at a reasonable price ---IF you can find them. While not an inexpensive coin, this 8 Pesos costs about what it did 40+ years ago in 1980.

Has almost exactly the same amount of gold in it as a French 40 Francs. I've already got the 5, 10 and 20 Pesos in AU58, AU55 and AU58. Which leaves the 4R, 1, 2, 4, and 16 Pesos left to acquire.

Terrific website the Atlas Numismatics provided me with ...,,.. Some great information on Guatemala gold coins.

Very impressive! That is a gorgeous piece.

I don't have any gold, but I do have some Guatemalan silver.

I had the 1926 Guatemala 1/4 and 1/2 Quetzal in MS63 & MS62 and sold them a few years ago. The 1/2 Quetzal in particular was a terrific coin, one of the few I regret letting go.

I'm into prooflike coinage, and there's a decent bit of good material from the 1816 to 1823 range.

Yep, this one PL too. Much more so than the 5, 10 or 20 Peso with higher mintages. I would suppose nearly all the coins struck were PL given the low mintage.

Kudos to Atlas Numismatics for the firms offerings and knowledge. Chris Baker who works with James Ricks is a Japan specialist, speaking the language quite fluently. Their coins are top notch and priced to reflect this fact.

Here's the other three in the set. Nice, but not as nice as the 8 Peso. These have more typical frost and luster. I also have a complete set of the 1926 gold coins, and while they have a terrific design, they are no where near as rare as the coins from the 1860s.

On the other side of the size spectrum, no images but I do own an 1864 4 Reales in gold - a very tiny and then affordable coin when I bought it as a teenager.

Used have one too, mine was harshly cleaned and I sold it on eBay many years ago. There's a nice one on eBay right now, AU58, but I can't quite bring myself to pay $350 for it. So little gold, and not really that rare. But has to be one of the nicest ones around, quite solid for the grade:

For a time I collected counterstamped coins and I picked this one up. I still occasionally get drawn in and bid on countermarked pieces here and there.

I really like your coins from Guatemala. I was in South America (Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay from 1966-1068. Before I left, I went to every store that sold coins or had access to them. I spent right much money. However, my wife of 26 years decided to throw me overboard for her high school sweetheart. I planned to come back to "our house" and pick up the last of my things which included a bunch of coins from those countries. She had changes the locks, so I had to wait for her to come back home. When she did, she told me that when I left, she thought I wouldn't want anything that I left behind. So, there went my South America coin collection. ( I don't want to rug dirt in her wounds, but the man she left me for has a brain tumor and now she has to take care of her vegetable. She can have him, I just wanted my coins.) Sorry for that tidbit.
