I was gifted this coin from a good friend. He seemed to think it has been cleaned. I don’t see evidence of that. Also, what do you think the grade might be? I’m sure it’s a proof. I would appreciate any input. Also possible value? Should I send it in for grading?

Definite proof, I don't see anything that says cleaned. It may have been improperly handle, but I think that is it.

It does look like a proof. It's a very common date, so I don't know that it would be worth the expense and hassle of submitting it for certification, but if you don't have very much invested in it and you just felt like doing that to see how it came back, it might be worth a shot. It's not a Cameo or anything, though, so even if it straight-graded, the value would still be fairly modest, even after you got it slabbed.

There's a chance it got mishandled a little bit, as @Pickin and Grinin mentioned. I personally don't see anything there in the pictures that's severe enough to prevent it from straight-grading, but then again, I'm not a TPG grader or a Franklin half specialist.

I'd keep it the way it is. It's a nice coin, but not the best slab candidate.

Nice looking coin, although i agree, it looks like it's been handled by a novice before it was encapsulated. I'd grill this "friend" about it's provenance. Make them sweat.
My bigger question, how do you get those doohickies open? Thanks!

Oh, you mean those plastic capsules? Carefully, by inserting a knife blade or similarly thin item you can use as a lever into the seam. Twist slightly, being careful not to slip with the tool and hit the coin, of course, and the two halves of the capsule will come apart.

Thank you. I couldn't even find the seam! I'll look a little closer

in some of them, there is a little notch cut out which aids in getting them open.

Yes- @CoinJockey73 - look for that little notch, if your capsules have them. It's easier to get your prying tool in there.

    Quick look on e-bay shows raw ones as having sold from $16-20 while Proof 65 = $25, 67 = $39, 68 = 55 and 69 = $319

Great coin! As for my opinion, Red Grapes are much better than Green Grapes.

While i agree, there are green grapes that can be spectacular, on occasion. I don't like to favor any of the grapes as it tends to make them uncomfortable. I think it's important to include all grapes in everything. Except grape tomatoes. They stink.

It's true! I'm totally a grape luver, and anti tomato. I've been exposed! Lock the thread! Lol. Sorry @Beardigger! I didn't mean to hijack your thread.
Can the machine doubling be pointed out, please? Me eyeballs isn't trained for such sightings yet. Thank you.
