Do you think that the optics justify an $1100 premium to the $300 current auction results prices. A94727FD-FA47-4FA7-8FE6-8BE4395D0429.png

There are collectors who prefer a nice BN graded Wheat Cent over RD right @robec

Top pop (or close to top pop) BN cents have a dedicated following, so they can go for multiples of price guide. I wouldn't buy this example, but I don't fault the seller for trying to get the max premium.

Beautifully toned BN copper can and do command nice premiums. Especially top pop grades.

I’m not a bit tempted by this coin at that price though.

Just an FYI: Never ever bid between $1,400-$1,499 on ANYTHING at an auction.

Why? Because any sales under $1,500 are taxed.

So if you bid $1,400 you end up paying like $1,510 after taxes whereas if you bid $1500 you only pay $1500 because there are no taxes on it.

I learned that the hard way. :(

Ah ok fair enough. I live in California and I do pay sales tax so you’re lucky you don’t have to deal with that.

My wife wants to move to Maine. We don't pay state tax here at the register. And we don't get state tax taken from our check. Maine hits the check hard on state tax. I can't imagine how much more my coins would have cost me. Or the coins I would have lost because state tax made them so much more.

Do what parts of my family do and live close enough to the NH border that you can get your shopping done in NH. Could even work in NH still if you wanted :)

If your address is in Maine you pay sales tax on eBay

Fortunately at least it can be avoided with the big purchases since there is no tax after $1,500.

I try to make sure when I bid at auction that I hit that mark.

Like when I bought my Athenian owl Tetradrachm it was $1,250 so to hit the $1,500 mark I bid $250 on a denarius I was interested in.

Yea I didn't realize that. But in all honesty I've yet to own a coin that I've paid that much for. Even my most expensive one. I actually like the Freedom NH area. Which is close to Maine, yet still in NH. Also, that area of Maine is my favorite because the topography is still basically the same as NH.
