Friend and Colleagues, Please accept this as a fill in for Billy Kingsley's Presentation. I just finished it only moments ago and had all of 30 to 45 min to do it. While it is a little on the vague side, it is what I could find in a very very short time. Charles Kennedy Burt Born the 8th of November 1823 in Edinburgh, Scotland- Charles Burt while at the quite young age of 12 studied in Scotland under S. Holme Lizars. In 1842 he came to New York City and began working for A.L. Dick where for most of his 4 years he worked on the engraving of Da Vinci’s “Last Supper”. It seems that Burt worked for all the major engraving Companies at one time or another and actually produced engravings for the B.E.P. while not even working there for a 20 year time span. He served as the President of the Graham Art School in Brooklyn, NY and was known to have painted in both oil and watercolors. His engravings grace United states Bank Notes, United States Bonds, Official Portraits of U.S. Secretaries of the Treasury, United States Obsolete Bank Notes, Stock Certificates, Stamps, Fractional Currency- 50cent note- (Lincolns Portrait) and numerous miscellaneous works. When looking for information on Mr. Burt, I happened upon this website that displays some of his works other than Security Engravings. It is a real treat to see his work outside of banknote engraving. Give yourself a few moments to check out this site. http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgkeysearchresult.cfm?keyword=Charles+Kennedy+Burt This link; http://www.wesleyan.edu/dac/imag/1994/0013/0002/1994-13-2-0005-m01.html will take you a fabulous etching and engraving he did in 1850 called the “Card Players”. While this image is copyrighted I thought providing a link would be just as good. The works of Mr. Burke seem to be endless and to this collector of US Banknotes he is among the most revered from a personal standpoint. He died in Brooklyn, NY in 1892 on the 25th of March for reasons I can not find. http://www.walterscott.lib.ed.ac.uk/portraits/engravers/burt.html Here are a few vignettes of Lincoln and Adams that he engraved. RickieB, Very informative presentation, the short amount of preparation for the" fill in presentation" ,you would never know, job well done and appreciated.
4 years on one engraving? Jeez, I'd go blind! Thanks for the write-up, he's done some nice work. Dave
I wasn't aware that I would be replaced if I didn't get it posted on the 17th...I do have a life outside of message boards, as hard as it may be to believe even to myself sometimes! Should I even bother to do mine?
Sometimes I wonder too, it seems like I spend way too much time on boards! I'm sure Rick was just trying to help out in case you'd gotten yourself busy somewhere... the next few weeks have no presentations scheduled, why don't you just grab next week (this coming weekend) and do it then? Certainly everyone wants to see it. Dave
Hi Billy: Take no offense please. Just trying to keep the rythym flowing here. The dates you sign up for should be upheld..so I took it upon myself to fill in since we did not hear from you. Please feel free to post on the 24th as that slot is open. If for any reason anyone can not make their time slot, please PM USS656, DaveM Connor1 or me (last resort)... I am looking forward to your presentation Billy. Regards, Rick
I will take next week, but I am thinking as of right now it will be my only presentation. Ever. While I do spend quite a bit of time online and on various message boards, there are times when I don't get online at all, or am too busy to even pull up a message board unless I get a PM. I simply won't be adding any extra stress in my life by trying to make a post on a specific day. Sorry, not going to happen. Message boards are fun for me, they are a way to relax and try and forget about all the crappy stuff going on in the real world. Perhaps you should stop listing it as the WEEK of 1/17 and say the DAY 1/17. I knew that I would be posting it this week but was unable to get here the 17th. Last I checked, this was still the WEEK of 1/17...no? Or maybe at least let people know that if they don't post it that day, they will be replaced. Honestly if that had been mentioned, I would not have even signed up for the group at all. I'm sorry if that comes off as a little gruff, but I am just not to pleased with this situation.
Billy, I am sorry you feel this way. This is now actually the week of the 18-24th. I sure do not want to see you go....In the original postings we did mention to let us know if you had trouble meeting a deadline and we could change with another person. I do hope you will reconsider and again, please take no offense to my fill in. Regards, Rick
Billy, please do reconsider hanging in with the group,I will be looking forward to your presentation. I also wouldn't want you to leave over a misunderstanding. Sincerely, Bob Connor
Rickie, the engravings of Lincoln and Adams have gotten detached. Could you repost? I'm seeing this a lot with Photobucket images lately.
