1939 Jefferson Nickel is this Grease in the reverse or something else? you tell me

    I'm curious what others will say, so I will proffer "lamination" as the response. Let's see how far off I am.

    usually lams have cracks or sharp edges these are perfectly smooth if not for the Error the nickel had VERY little circulation and might go XF. really nice look in hand

    might be but I am 99% sure I saw this coin somewhere in error picture in here, might have been when someone sent me pictures of brokeage caps and this nickel was in a picture off to the side on a different page. We'll see

    Dunno. Not in my arena.

    I agree that it doesn't quite look like laminations, but it could have been some other kind of flawed planchet, maybe? (If it's not PMD.)

    It doesn't quite look like a "greaser" to me, either (but again- not my arena).

    A flawed, incomplete planchet of some kind would be my wild guess. But that's all it is. A wild guess.

    ok the letters are clear and undamaged even UNUM (in a pit) I took more in low light and at an angle, WIN_20210922_08_22_03_Pro.jpg WIN_20210922_08_22_21_Pro.jpg WIN_20210922_08_22_49_Pro.jpg WIN_20210922_08_33_56_Pro.jpg WIN_20210922_08_34_00_Pro.jpg reminds me of looking at a rock bottom in a clear creek with water flowing.

    I'm surprised no one has asked for the weight. I'm going to hazard a guess that it is underweight by up to 5%.

    The obverse area @ K11 seems like a planchet issue.

    Decent rims and details on the periphery of the reverse.

    Hmmm ... I wonder if this could be a "rolling" issue that affected one side of the sheet more than the other.

    Damaged, imo, based on the 'lit' photos.

    Not a lamination issue or bad planchet, imo.

    Thank you folks! You put this nickel through the mill. Thank you for your time Just an odd one for the books. Majority says Damaged so I'll go with that and throw it back into circulation for a newbee to find.

    I was hoping for the weight, but now I'll have to buy up all the nickels that get turned in to Coinstar tonight and see if I can find it to weigh it. :happy:
