Good evening all I came across a quarter earlier that I think is missing the obverse clad layer but there’s a high chance I could be wrong and it’s just ED! Any help would as always be much appreciated Missing clad layer or ED? by Darren Edwards posted Sep 21, 2021 at 6:16 PM Missing clad layer or ED? by Darren Edwards posted Sep 21, 2021 at 6:16 PM
Lol, damn how do I keep getting this wrong? I thought if one side was that color I was onto a sure thing!
Thanks for the picture for reference, think I need to do a bit more homework on coins like this before I think I’ve found one again lol.
The chances of finding such an error these days is like 0.1%.He found his in a mint bag in the early early 2000's.I doubt its possible to find one like that these day's just out of the blue.If you want to buy one you might have to empty your wallet and be in debt for an example similar to his.Not all of them are that bad some can be had very easily and not nearly as costly. He got a pretty good deal for just 50 cents I couldn't imagine what it must of felt like when found.
Coin sitting in the center console of car, as an example, (many ways really) exposed to sun and perhaps fast food etc. one side stays decent other side ED big time
When I opened that bag and started going through them, one by one, I did a double-take and then a triple-take when I saw it. I just couldn't believe my eyes. Whaddaya mean 50c! It cost me 68c and the submission to NGC was free.
Not all will have the copper layer shining as brightly as this. Those that have made it into circulation will begin turning brown, but they still won't show the silvery color of the clad layer. @paddyman98 has a few certified in his collection of error coins. Perhaps he will post some of them for you.
I've seen you post this coin probably a half dozen times on these forums already (probably more that I missed). If you posted it 100 times more, I still wouldn't get tired of looking at it. I find this coin to be outfreakingstanding. A joy to behold. Thanks for posting it again. I'm already looking forward to the next time.
Thanks! Cheech is another who likes to see it, and I usually make it a point to tag her whenever I do post the image. The only reason I didn't tag her on this thread is because I already tagged her on another thread. So, I've put both of you on a Post-It note to remind me to tag the two of you whenever I show it.
The coin was in contact with something that changed the surface color to what you now see, so ED, environmental damage. A spender.
a coiin can lay on the ground, or somewhere else, one side up, the bottom side would then might be shiny and the top not so...usually when missing a clad layer, the weight is off a bit, and the details on the coin less struck, since there is less metal being struck at the minting of said coin, just my opinion as i have a few (slabbed) and unslabbed i have purchased, and i too, have mistakenly thought missing clasd layer when i first started collecting errors a little over a year ago..paddyman has helped quite a lot in tutoring me on this
