1968 lincoln penny with huge date and w

    hello everyone ,how is everyone?i got this 1968 lincoln penny the date is huge and thick and sharply stamped along with the w in we above lincolns head.the rest of the letters are fine.any clue to how and why they are like that/when compared to another 1968 penny the w and year is small and fine?thank you for any tips...

    yes i will try lol the date and w is huge and like 3 times the normal thickness.the rest of the letters are fine and correct

    wow i just found on the e in we is clearly doubled at the bottom!!the e is there normaly and there is another line at the bottom with the same line overlapping.:)

    You may think that the date is large for it's size, but this is normal. The very next year(69) you will notice that there are differences in shape than the 68. This is because the mint changed( and does every once and awhile), the image of Lincoln to make it fit better in retrospect to the rest of the field. The mint is always trying to make changes to this coin and always will.

    Exactly, as jessash1976 points out, the date is larger, more robust and often stumps new collectors.

    Jesse P, as stated, we'll need pics of the doubling in the motto...

    Hi,

    It is a normal 1968 dated cent:) As noted, the hubs used to make the dies were extremely worn by 1968. All the details even on a perfectly struck 1968 dated cent look huge when compared to cents dated 1969. In 1969, new hubs were created and the dies ultimately created had crisp details that were by comparison, much sharper and finer than what we see on 1968 dated cents.
