I just purchased this 1878-S morgan certified by Pcgs this weekend to kick off my new collection...Compared to the other morgans I looked at , same year/mintmark..I think its a bit undergraded,or maybe the other were overgraded. But I am a newb to grading...So I figured I would get the forums opinion..Have at it.
I'm going to say MS62 on this one. It's a nice looking coin with nice clean fields free of many bag marks. Overall, this coin appears to be a nice high grade MS. Unfortunately, there is a sizable mark on Liberty's chin and on her lower neck that I believe keeps this coin from achieving that high MS grade it appears to deserve. I would call this coin MS62 at best because those big marks are in focal areas and really hurts the coin IMHO.
The coin is pretty clean, at first glance it looks like a 65, but that hit on the chin and neck brings it down. Imo I would call it a 64, and an easy 65 if it wasn't for the 2 scrapes. Nice Morgan :thumb:.
I was going to say ms-64, the strike is really good, the marks are not as baggy as some I have seen with a 64, the piece almost looks PL to me, possibly photos or slab reflection. I tended to give it a bump for its excellent strike if it did not have that UNfortunate chin sling I might have gone higher, I suppose that the mark could be some die deterioration, for all I know it could be some sort of VAM, looking forward to finding out what the tpg gave it.
That's a great looking coin. Congratulations on your purchase. I am not an expert on grading Morgans, but it looks like an MS64 to me. I would not be surprised if PCGS graded it a MS63 though. TC
you know its funny that scrape on the chin is virtually non existent under 9x magnification, and the chunk missing on her chin closest to her neck looks almost like it was in the die...thanks for the opinions and for doing the poll....
Too baggy for gem but the coin is well struck, has outstanding luster, and is very attractive. None of the marks are major or too distracting. I give it a solid MS64.
I will post the grade in a bit, I just wanted to get a decent amount of posts before I let the coin out of the bag.......:thumb:
I'm going to have to follow the masses on this and go MS64. Fields look decent but the cheek and eye area are a little banged up.
The shadows in the picture make it hard to tell but I'll guess 63. The neck deal I think could be a die issue as I have seen it on a couple others. And that lower jaw hurts but what is that above the eye is that on the holder? Great coin either way.
Very nice photos. I am going with my first instinct and call it 64. I am worried about some of the marks on the check and in the right field on the obverse. I was going between a 63 and 64.
You guys are pretty darn good Well the majority vote has it...Pcgs says its MS-64..as did most of you.....This poll helped me to answer a question I had about all the other morgans same date/mint I looked at before choosing this one..The dealer I went to had a box full of MS-64 coins and this one was by far the nicest...I guess I could hope they undergraded this one, but the lesson for me is the proof of what is said on here all the time .."buy the coin not the holder" I am very happy with my purchase, because I spent the time to look for a nice coin in the grade I wanted...maybe some will find nicer ones, maybe some already have one, but at least now that I have looked through multiple coins of the same grade(by the same company)I know not to settle for a coin or just buy it because they say it is that grade....Thanks
