I have no idea how we aquired this coin. Sometimes we go to a coin dealer and dig through the bins and just pull out some stuff that catches the eye, only to examin it better later. It is like the blink test and it is effective to get a mix of otherwise unusual items which would otherwise not be aquired or looked at, and that expands our knowledge and enhanced the variety of the collection This was an 1850 5C from the Netherlands. It is somewhat of an impressive date for US coins, but the Dutch coinage, of course, goes back much further. And this is a small small coin It is nice to have a REAL macro camera!
It is almost like those Yehud coins, if you have seen those. They can be mistaken for shards is silver or fingernail cuttings But even in 1850 they got the whole details of the protrait on the coin.
