My latest pickup, an actual coin die from the Philadelphia mint!

So, ever since I learned that the mint sometimes sold dies, I have wanted one!

Well... yesterday at my LCS I noticed they had one for sale so I grabbed it!

Anyway... this was from the Philadelphia mint and it is accompanied by a Massachusetts state quarter, one of the first actual coins struck with this die! It just feels like such a great piece to have as a coin collector! I am super excited to add it to my collection!

While it would have been cool if it was from a state that I have a connection to, and I do wish that they did not grind off the design, I understand why they do it, and it is still just super exciting to own! It's the small things that just make me happy :D

Dearborn Above average collector - Is that an Error?

pretty cool. I would like to have one too, but I want a broken or chipped one.
And the design was obliterated on that die, huh? Guess you won't be pressing out your own quarters? LOL

That's pretty cool. Such a bummer that they grind the entire design off. I've seen some of the Atlanta half dollar (?) dies that just have a big "X" across them. Those are pretty neat.

Cool piece. Looks like it clashed with the collar for a while.

My plans have been foiled! haha! I don't think that would be very profitable anyway :D

I've seen some with just a big X over it, and I would definitely like to own one of those at some point as well!

I'm pretty sure you are right! The certificate says that the reason it was retired was due to "Piece Out Border"
