Fun coins, and probably made by different shops using a similar design. Does anyone out there know how many different varieties of these there were? It just occurred to me that this is a kind-of "emergency" issue.

I'm at best a "casual" collector of Civil War Tokens, but just quoting what I can find in the Fifth Edition of "Patriotic Civil War Tokens" by George and Melvin Fuld:

There are 12 different obverse dies ("The Flag of Our Union" and flag facing right) and 10 reverse dies (DIX in middle, rest of text around with or without misspelling). All the reverse dies, and all but one obverse die, are attributed to "unknown die sinker in the area of Waterbury, Connecticut, possibly Waterbury Button Company". The remaining obverse die was apparently hubbed from a Waterbury die by Henry Darius Higgins, Main Street, Mishawaka, Indiana, who is known to have done so for several other dies; he made small quantities of relatively poorly-made tokens for local use. Only one of the reverse dies (#414) has the "SPOOT" misspelling. My guess is that it was just a careless moment by a younger engraver in the shop, maybe while daydreaming; the double O of "SHOOT" may have made it easier for him to mistakenly put in "SPOOT".

Civil War Tokens are definitely interesting, I have a mini-collection of about 20 or so that I've accumulated as a side project.

CWTs can be addicting. One thing I suggest is buy the best example you can afford. Yes this is true in coins as well.... but in tokens it is absolutely critical if you want to gain any equity at all.
