Despite being called the Gothicus, Claudius II has surprisingly few coins specifically marked as VICTORIAE GOTHIC. This is kind of interesting as you'd expect a whole slew of coins celebrating the Gothic victory, but this doesn't appear to be the case. Further, the few GOTHIC coins aren't struck very well. Not like Claudius II's coins are struck well to begin with, but again surprisingly that the coins celebrating the Gothic victory are so ragged. Also, what kinda portrait is that? Looks rather alien-like. Please post your GOTHIC victory coins!
That's one ragged flan, @hotwheelsearl! Tacitus proudly advertised his victory over the Goths: Tacitus, AD 275-276. Roman billon antoninianus, 3.57 gm, 21.1 mm. Ticinum, AD 276. Obv: IMP C M CL TACITVS AVG, radiate and cuirassed bust, right. Rev: VICTORIA GOTTHI, Victoria standing left, holding wreath and palm; P in exergue. Refs: RIC 172; Cohen 158; Sear 11821; Hunter 59; CBN 1676.
Here’s mine, one of my favorite Claudius II coins. Claudius II "Gothicus", Antoninianus Cyzicus mint, AD 269. IMP CLAVDIUS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. VICTORIAE GOTHIC, Two captives leaning besides a trophy. Ref: RIC V-1 252; Cohen # 308, SRCV # 11381
I have something similar to the OP coin to show Claudius II "Gothicus", Antoninianus - Cyzicus mint, AD 269. IMP CLAVDIUS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. VICTORIAE GOTHIC, Two captives leaning besides a trophy. 3.08 gr Ref : RCV # 11381; RIC V pt. 1 # 252; Cohen # 308 This antoninianus comemorates Claudius II' victory against Goths at Naissus, thus becoming "Gothicus" Q
In line with the significance of his victory over the Goths, I thought that Claudius II VICTORIAE GOTHICAE series was rather large and varied. I can also not see that they are more ragged than the rest of Claudius' coins: Here are pieces from my collection: Note: the last one looks common, but it shows the rare and linguistically significant variant VICTORIA GVTTICA AVG
Just in the mail today from the "unattributed" bowels of eBay - a Claudius II VICTORIA(E?) GOTHIC with the trophy and captives. Pretty thrilled to get one of these - I was lusting after the ones posted above. I'm having a bit of a time attributing it - it is a head (not a draped, etc. bust) with what might be an aegis and two dots below. Wildwinds has one like this, apparently from this CNG auction: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=729403 Description Claudius II Gothicus. AD 268-270. Antoninianus (21mm, 3.51 g, 11h). Cyzicus mint, 2nd officina. 4th emission, late AD 269. IMP CLAVDIVS P F AVG, radiate bust right, wearing aegis on far shoulder; two pellets below / VICTORI A E GOTHIC, trophy; bound captive seated to left and right. Normanby 1107 var. (no aegis); cf. RIC V 252; Mairat 351-3 var. (no aegis); cf. Venèra 9898-9901. VF, brown surfaces, light die clashing on reverse. Rare. From the White Mountain Collection. Photo from Wildwinds (same as CNG auction above): Here's mine - aegis or drapery on the far shoulder? Heck if I can tell - there are a lot of varieties, as this post demonstrates. Any help with attributing this much appreciated...
Nice coin, love these! Can’t do it myself at the moment but I’d filter under advanced search here: https://ric.mom.fr/en/search/advanced
Ps: I’d also point out what appear to be the two dots under the obverse bust… they’ll likely narrow things down to a few variations from Cyzicus.
Thank you for that suggestion @Orange Julius - I'd forgotten about that resource. Now it seems that is not an aegis, but rather a bit of drapery, 2 dots. https://ric.mom.fr/en/coin/987?temp...e=&Reference=&page=1&mod=result&from=advanced I am rather convinced of this attribution because of what appears to be an obverse die match! I am somewhat bewildered by the "RIC Temp 987" reference. I can't seem to find this in OCRE. The site also references "Wildwinds s3223", which is also puzzling. Wildwinds has an example that seems to be the same, described thusly: "Metropolis hoard 79 in ANS AJN 18, 2006; Normanby hoard 1108A var (bust type), RIC V-1, 252 Cyzicus var (bust type)." Thanks again! Die matches always make me happy.
The temp number is the tentative number given as they work on the update to the RIC volume (may change as the project continues). The RIC reference number is included under the main information. See the pic included. Looks like you got it! Ps: I think s3223 is for Sear 3223, which is probably the old Sear volume.
