I heard last year that collectors were complaining that the date of the dollars were not on the obverse. The mint was considering moving the date back in 2010. Does anyone know if this has happened? I too dont like not being able to see the year and mintmark on the front of the coin.
I like to think I keep up with stuff but I've never heard this one. Since when does the US Mint give a hoot what collectors say anyway? If they did, coins in US Mint wrapped rolls would not be all beat to death. If they did, Silver Proof set quality would improve dramatically. If they did, perhaps more than just a couple Satin Finish MS69 coins could be obtained without selling your soul! If they did then we'd all have 2009-W SAE's and GAE's! If they did, US Mint wrapped Dollar rolls wouldn't cost $35.95. Each. If they did, collectors would be able to purchase 2009 Nickels and Dimes directly from the US Mint Web Site! As far as I know there has been no decussion about moving the date back off the edge. It would required legislation in order to move it because the law specifies that it appear on the edge.
.....they like to move the date TO the edge instead of OFF the edge, as evidenced by the native american bucks. ridiculous!
one of the failure of the presidential and native american series is "date on the edge". that's terrible. a vary bad world record.
I don't see the date being on the edge as being a problem because every NA dollar and President dollar is a one year type so there is no question as to what the date is. The real problem was putting the mintmark on the edge.
There in lies the rub If anybody cares, notices or used these coins of the future, I'm thinking the MM will be the 1st victim of circulation. When I find machines that accept them it seems the edge takes the brunt of the insertion. So....There in lies the rub.
