Good evening, I wanted to ask what people think of the 2021 limited edition proof set? I'm thinking that the price is a bit high but then again there is two silver eagles in this set and this would be the only limited set, at least in my lifetime, that offers an old and new design.
I am finished with the US Mint scams. Nothing but fabricated rarities. The Limited Edition Silver Proof Set is one of the biggest scams.
I like it, but too pricey for me, I'll wait for the excitement to die down. I recently bought the 2020 set - missing the extra reverse silver proof nickel - for $95. Then I bought one of those for $16.99. Buying them all together as the set is usually $140 and up on the secondary market, I will keep my eyes open for the same thing next year with the 2021 set.
I would love one but if I bought every variation of silver dollar offered this year I could pay next months mortgage. To pricey for me anymore.
I agree with you and a few others that state, "too expensive" or "too pricey" yet, a rare set due to Old & New designs, however, we must also remember the US Mint has realized this is a profitable business and they cater to the collectors and demand. Beginning with the 2011 Anniversary set, the US Mint has created its own market for rare coins and profits handsomely through all of us. The issue I have with some are the limited quantity, lack of access to purchase and the dishonesty of some to find ways to purchase more than allotted yet, they are only doing what the Mint is so, oh well.
I have a nice side business going flipping these to large coin sellers that will then mark them up even higher after grading for the uneducated, though i am about 50/50 with the mints crappy website; they should farm that out to an ecommerce company that can let it take an order w/o it not accepting & finding the Thank you page 20 times before it finally accepts.
What makes it even more rare are your odds of even getting the website to process the order before its sold out!!!
The reverse proof nickel came with the 2020 silver proof set, which sold for $105 new, not the 2020 limited edition silver proof set which sold for $201.
The 2021 Limited Edition set is priced at $235, so if you were planning on getting a silver proof set and the 2 new proof eagles, it looks like it could be an ok deal. The regular silver proof set is $105 and the proof eagles are $73, so separately they cost more, $251. In the past, the limited edition set was more expensive than the separate parts, which made no sense. FWIW, I've never been a buyer and don't plan to be.
As of 2018 I have not and will not purchase from the U.S. Mint. Never say never, I will reconsider, if and when they realize they missed the boat with us commoners. I'm definitely not holding my breath... My opinion. Thanks for posting your question, good luck.
I hadn't thought about there being 2 ASEs in the Limited Set. Did the 2 types of ASEs come in the Silver Proof Set. I keep all of my USM purchases on an EXCEL spreadsheet which I get all the information by year of purchase. I'm thinking of modifying my spreadsheet to show exactly which coins are in any of the "sets" that they sell, i.e., The Proof Set, The Silver Proof Set, The Limited Proof set, etc. That way I can readily see the benefit of each set. (Being a CPA and State Auditor for over 30 years has taught me many ways of investigation.)
The silver proof set did not have either ASEs and cost $105. This set costs $235 so that would get you the two ASEs for $130. Since I have both ASEs already, I'm leaning toward passing on this set.
The 2021 Silver Proof set, which I purchased, was overpriced more than enough. I guess they have another one with a Proof Silver Eagle in it?
