Is anyone following the cricket at GC? It's already over $1k and there are 52 days to go. What do you think the final hammer will be? And will this set the record for highest price for the weirdest slabbed item? Here is the description from Great Collections: "And so the legend goes, back in the 1990s, there was a cricket disturbing the coin graders at PCGS, until one of them caught it and put it in a slab. It was then the subject at a high level meeting of graders where it was decided to give it to error expert Mr. Fred Weinberg. This has been featured in articles, many online forum posts, and even in David Schwager's book on Sample Slabs (page 394). It has also been on display at major coin shows around the U.S., including the most recent ANA in Rosemont (2021). Please note: the cricket remains are very fragile and may break into additional parts in the future. We would grade the cricket a solid MS-65 Full Head (Detached). Believed unique." https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...ket-Remains-From-the-Fred-Weinberg-Collection
LOLthis is a first thanks for the nightly JKM I would love to have it but don't see emptying my pockets of all my dough for that.
It reminds me of the very first computer bug. World’s First Computer Bug | National Geographic Society
You made me bust out laughing...almost lost my mouthful of cereal!!! Perhaps I'm easily amused but life is more fun when you're laughing!
You don't think? The sample slabs that pop up online from time to time seem to be growing in popularity. This is just next level. I don't blame GC.. I blame the people willing to pay over a thousand dollars for a decapitated cricket from the 1990's.
Honestly, I am surprised there isn't a "Professional Bug Grading Service". With all the stupidest things getting slabbed in plastic nowadays, I would expect bugs are around the corner.
Interesting novelty. I'd like to see how high it goes. You know someone will pay a lot of money to own it. Maybe PCGS will start grading dead bugs. You know when money is involved everything is on the table.
many things could be gradable - human remains are legal to own in this country. How long until we begin grading medieval ribcages? "full rib variety", "unfused skull variety" I'm sure you could find someone to preserve bugs for you, and then have a label with the species and whatever. Commercializing it and making it collectible is the next step. The interest is there, I'm sure. Can't wait to build a cockroach species set for the registry.
This should have been a GTG post. Personally, though, I have zero interest in a cricket enclosed in a slab. I wouldn't pay for it at any price. I wouldn't keep it if I found it on the floor.
Well I guess we get to find out what Fred's "celebrity" is worth to people. Hahahhaha "One of a kind, owned by Fred Weinberg!" The description doesn't mention them killing it before slabbing it by the way.......
I'll pass on the cricket, but I'm in the market for a graded cockroach. Preferably still alive in the slab. LOL
