I’ve seen many YouTube videos and pictures of coins and most of the collectors have trays padded with what looks like velvet or something and then a bunch of individual square compartments for each coin. Many I saw had a piece of paper under the coin to label it. I am looking for something like this so I can buy raw coins and store them. But I’ve never seen a website like APMEX or JM Bullion sell the tray things.
Abafil and Zecchi make nice coin trays - I think the example you showed is an Abafil tray. As you're in the US, it may be easiest to get them from Ed Waddell - https://coin.com/cases/ ATB Aidan
I have 30 that I inherited but unfortunately there is no manufacturer info on them anywhere. These each have 4 drawers with 16 compartments big enough for up to a 2x2, and they are stackable. You might try Googling jewellery supplies and storage as well. Sorry I can't help you further
Wizard Coin Supplies is my go-to store for all coin supplies: 2 x 2 Display Cases They have other sizes, too.
Starting to think they pay you to post. The trays are easy to get ahold of. Many different ones out there. Go to Walmart or Hobby Lobby and grab a jewelry organizer. It's the same thing and you'll pay less than the handcrafted whatevers that get the big mark up. Heres one on amazon, slightly larger than 2x2in (2" x 2 1/4") Will fit most every coin. https://www.amazon.com/FindingKing-...d=1&keywords=coin+tray&qid=1631107178&sr=8-33
Looks like BEBA trays. These are standard in Germany and parts of Europe with most dealers and collectors. Trays come in a lot of inner sizes, they stack magnificently. Not for show - best for large collections. https://www.safe-album.de/munzen-banknoten/munzkasten.html
The tray shown is an Abafil, specifically one of their "Deluxe" trays which are lined with velvet. The standard ones are OK too, but they feel a bit cheaper and are made of a different material, if you can afford it, you'll want to buy the "deluxe" or velvet trays in my opinion. As Aidan points out, Ed Waddell is the main dealer for Abafil in the US. When I switched to Abafil I actually managed to get a better deal from SpinkBooks in the UK, even after shipping, however they haven't restocked in a while so their inventory is hit or miss. I've been shopping around for a bit because I am close to running out of room in my trays and haven't managed to find a better deal currently than Ed Waddell. If you decide to store them in a safe deposit box at a bank, be sure to measure first. I found that my 5-tray Abafil case annoyingly doesn't fit my safe deposit box even though by the measurements posted by the bank, I expected that it would. The 2-tray cases fit just fine but the 5 tray case is maybe a quarter inch too thick.
Thank you. When my Father in Law started collecting in the 1950's in Norway he only had envelopes and coffee cans. When he started to seriously collect in the 1960's he was married and living in South Germany, so what you say fits perfectly in his case
And when it is BEBA - you have to turn your case around. At the moment the bottom is up - trays should stick a littel bit!
@Gam3rBlake, I was also going to suggest Lighthouse trays (the U.S. version of Leuchtturm in Germany) as a reasonably-priced but still perfectly presentable alternative to the "top-of-the-line" Abafil trays. I've been using them for years, ever since the Lindner trays -- with which Lighthouse trays are compatible for stacking purposes -- became either unavailable or ridiculously expensive to buy in the U.S.A. Here's a link with a photo of the kind I use: https://www.lighthouse.us/coin-boxes-with-square-compartments.html They're available with many different-sized compartments; see https://www.lighthouse.us/downloads/dl/file/id/295/us_mb_box_selection_guide.pdf I've ordered them in the past both directly from Lighthouse and from this Internet dealer: https://www.ihobb.com/c/LIGHTHOUSE_COIN_DISPLAY_BOXES.html
OP is definitely an Abafil tray. IDK for the USA, but I have ordered directly from them (they are in Milan, Italy) and was very satisfied with the shipping to France. They also sometimes sell at discounted prices https://www.abafil.com/en/42-coin-collecting Q
Unless you collect large cheap coins, the cost of the tray is going to be a small fraction of what's lying in it, so no harm getting nice ones When you get enough Abafil trays, you can get the Marmotta case which holds 20 trays (I'm up to about 30). Unfortunately, it doesn't hold the extra deep trays, but is otherwise holds my RR coins, plus a tray of Augustus coins, plus one of imitative denarii (plenty of room for more coins in that one). While I've used a lot of tags here, I think it would be better to put the tags adjacent to the coins rather than under them, from an abrasion point of view. So... need more trays... ATB, Aidan.
I cut up SAFLIPs and put them between coins and tags. Some of my more "purist" friends seem to hate them but I am much less worried about abrasion.
I can add little to what has been said here but I'm very fond of my Abafil cases. I have 4 different size cases and all fit in my bank deposit box. I did want to thank you @Gam3rBlake for the image of my tray and coins in your OP. Always happy to make some sort of impression.
One advantage of the traditional coin trays is that the tag can go under the felt. That said, the felt disc itself can be fairly abrasive. If someone made little velvet discs, I'd buy 1000. ATB, Aidan.
Yes absolutely. They pay me good money to post complaints about stuff they don’t sell. OR maybe it’s because they’re just two of the biggest coin & bullion sellers in the country? Think about it. It’s like someone saying they’re looking for something but couldn’t find it at Walmart. Does it mean Walmart pays them? No it’s just a way of saying that even the biggest businesses don’t have something.
Lol is that really your tray? I just found it doing a Google search to find an example of one similar to the ones I’ve seen in videos. Great case! Very smart to use capsules too.
