Should I wait to get caught up?

I put this thread in the US Coins Forum rather than the Bullion Forum because I am interested in collecting all of the ASE dates, not necessarily the bullion side of these coins.

With that being said here is my dilemma. I have quite a few holes to fill in my ASE uncirculated collection and I was fortunate enough to work quite a bit of overtime last pay period so I have some money left over. I'm sure that I could probably fill all the holes needed in my ASE collection with my local coin shop tomorrow, but their prices are a bit high. There is a coin show coming near me in April where I am sure I could get better prices than my local shop. The dilemma arises when you factor in the price of silver. ASE's closely follow silver bullion prices and I expect silver prices to be higher in April (this is just my opinion and I could be wrong). Is it worth the gamble to wait until the April coin show and risk higher silver bullion prices or would it be better to get my coins from the local shop tomorrow?

What does the cointalk community think? What woud you do? My gut feeling isn't pointing me in any particular direction this time :(

what i would do is compare prices between the coin store near your home and anywhere else i can find ase's and find the lowest prices. Check a local antique mall or pawn shop near your home. sometimes they have good deals. But if you cant find anything try the internet. or you can wait til april when i think silver will go up again.

Please do not hunt me down if I'm wrong on this, but I would expect silver to climb slightly this spring, but not anything that would force an impulse buy right now. Besides, if you buy all of the eagles you need right now you'll have no reason to go to the show. I say spread the wealth and do both. By the way, congratulations and be thankful you have overtime right now. I'd take all the overtime I could handle right nowif they offered it to me!

LOL, im not going to hunt anyone down! So what you are saying is maybe buy 1/2 tomorrow and wait until the coin show to get the rest? Sounds like really good advice! :high5: I am still going to to go to the coin show because I'm hoping to find a nice slabbed 1916-D Mercury Dime to nearly complete that collection. ;)

That extra dough just be burnin' a hole in the pocket eh Swagge? It's a tough call. I wouldn't wait for the April show though. Try to bargain with the local fellow. Maybe you can strike a deal if you purchase a certain number of coins.

Yeah I guess the money is sort of burning a hole in my pocket. I am extremely blessed and fortunate to be in a profession that has done decently during the recession and is rebounding nicely now.I've already bought my 2010 Roth, put 10K towards the principle of my house, and invested 11K more into GE (general electric stock) right before it went up 9% in the last 2 weeks! Pretty much all of my major financial purchases and investments are done for the year except for that 1916-D. I agree that if I buy quite a few coins from the dealer that he might just give me a price break.

Wow, you must be really soaking up some good overtime! I've finally come to realize that hole will probably be open at least until the kids are out of the house. In reality, that may even be a bit soon!:D

I feel your pain swagge1, I'm trying to fill holes to complete my ase collection as well. I was at a local show in Nov(?), and found a dealer who had a complete set of ASEs at $20 each for any year. But I only picked up a couple. Now I'm stuck trying to fill from evilbay paying up to $27 each. But since I decided to wait, it ended up costing me.

I'm new to coin collecting, but so far it seems that patience typically pays off more times than not. I think the advice of getting half tomorrow and then waiting for the show to complete your set would be a good way to go.

I won't practice what I preach...I have 2 more to go, but don't think I can wait for the next show in April...so I'll probably just pay extra and get them off the bay ;)

    Good luck!
