Hello again, If anyone can identify this Medieval penny I'd be very surprised. As you can see it's in a terrible state, it looks like the guy who hammered it must have been on the ale! I don't think I've found such a wishy washy looking coin before. All I can make out is the mint, York. Well at least you're getting to see the best and worst of my coins!
Not sure if it helps or not...lol Here is my Edward III from York for comparison: Here is Edward I that also could be it:
Congrats on the coin @clanger It's a penny from the Episcopal mint in York. The reverse legend reads CIVI/TAS/EBO/RACI and there is a quatrefoil in the center of the reverse cross. This type of penny was struck from the reign of Edward I until the end of the long cross penny, but this coin looks to be of Edward III, maybe 4th coinage post treaty period. That would put it in the period of 1369-1377 if my guess is correct. The bust just doesn't have the look of Edward I or the Lancaster kings. Also the letters look to be Edwardian. The first coin @furryfrog02 posted is most likely what you have. Congrats on the Edwardian pennies FF, you have two nice examples.
Thanks so much for all this info! Yep it is a pretty ugly looking coin. Should have mentioned the field it came from seems to be around 14 th century going by finds made previously. Not that this is helpful cos I guess coins were in circulation long after the monarch was dead!
