I like really the design of these Netherland 5 Euro commems. I had only wished the little circle inside was designed more concave and bowl-like with a raised numeral. I can't tell if you are only photographing the silver coin but there is also a gold version as well. I love that this coin includes the name Manna-Hata, as the Lenape people knew the island. Also check out the Mannahatta Project website. The city had a lot of celebrations this past summer for the 400th anniversary as well: Hudson 400 NY 400 Henry Hudson 400 Explore NY 400 Dutchess 400 400 Years Later, Another Dutch Island [NY Times] And of course, Walt Whitman's verse Mannahatta
Do the Dutch currently store any of their gold downtown? Maybe the coin let's people keep their eye on their goud
Doesn't take money just passion to get cool coins like this and this coin doesn't come cheap either, most are $50-$70 retail.
Thanks. Chris and I had discussed this coin quite a bit before it was released. And then, just as it was released, my life went upside down. Finally, I scavenged up a spare 40 dollar and looked everywhere for the coin, but it really sold out across the board. I was so lucky to find it for the price I did. And I tried to go to the Dutch Celebrations here in the city. This is the second modern Dutch Commem I brought. We also have this one http://www.mrbrklyn.com/arch.html Ruben
There were just 20,000 of the silver proof commem. minted. I don't have a mintage number on the gold coin. There are a few coins in this Netherlands 2009 400 series I quite the Japan designs as well.
