@cpm9ball I know you will scold me for this Hello everyone, Today I want to share a new addition to my Numismatic library.. Strike It Rich with Pocket Change 5th Edition - 2021 By Ken Potter and Dr. Brian Allen I gave an earlier edition away to one of my fishing buddies about 4 years ago and noticed this copy at Barnes and Noble so I wanted to own it once again. I like the book. Only because I understand it better than a newbie to the hobby would. It gives great descriptions of many different Varieties and Mint Errors. My favorite part is on the 2000 P 25c/$1 Mule A 50 States quarter obverse struck with a 2000 Sacagawea. Considered one of the greatest Mint Errors of all time In my opinion it's a good reference book for Variety and Error collectors. I'm a numismatist (did I say that right?) only for the enjoyment of collecting not for making any profit.
I have a very old error book I have used from time to time. Guess it's time to update. It gives me "ballpark" info now.
Frank Spadone had many different editions of that book. They were filled with a lot of misinformation It was one of the first sources of error coin information that I found back in the 1980's but I did learn from the good info it provided.
Mr. P., this is what I hate the most about this book..... That header causes every treasure-hunting nutcase who knows squat about coins to come here displaying some road rash piece of s*%t and arguing with everyone that they don't know what they are talking about. Now, if it said something like, "Your penny might be worth 10c, and if you find one million of them, you've got yourself a small fortune (before shipping and insurance).
....and many of the photos of 'die varieties' were enhanced; ....and many of the photos of double strikes are fakes/counterfeits. It was one of my earliest Error books too, but I soon found out how worthless the vast majority of info in the book was. Most of the die varieties in the book were also being sold by Spadone, and that was one of the main reasons he did the book, I was told many decades ago.
Having a nice library of books about coins and currency is important to me for reference purposes, so good for you. BTW, Brian Allen was a member here. @Strike It Rich Seems he isn't active now. PS - I have the mule coin you speak of. Of course it's a replica. LOL
And the reality of it all is the odds of finding something in circulation that will make the finder rich is the same as finding a few buckets of gold coins while taking your dogs out for a early morning squirt. That book reminds me of books about how to pick the winning lottery jackpot numbers. Authored by someone who's claimed they've won the jackpot 5 or more times. Purchased by very desperate individuals looking for vast amounts of wealth to be miracled to them. That's why they get so bent when they come on this site and get a reality check. I remember there was a member on this forum some time ago who put it in so many words, in effect, out of all the years of roll hunting they did, they've not found anything that was worth a six pack of beer or more. I've kept that in mind since reading it.
THANK YOU! I have enough "misinformation" in my head without a book feeding me more! Going in the trash
C'moooon, lets not speak poorly about the deceased. Spadone's daughter got left trying to dispose of many hundreds of his books after he passed. It was an introduction to varieties and errors. It was never the end all book to begin with and was done on a shoe string budget. SIR is not really better in the sense that it is also self promoting and Ken Potter sells errors also. Maybe legit ones, but nevertheless...
By the way.. Here is an old thread of mine from 2015 https://www.cointalk.com/threads/19...us-coins-my-first-source.261195/#post-2108429
