Toning on coin in blue velvet box

Interesting...just learned about all this since CT also...last few months...but it must have something more to do with the proximity of ammo to coins or maybe the types of ammo. For years I've had a standard, four-drawer file cabinet, and have always kept coins in the lower two drawers (cooler) and guns/ammo in the upper two...lots of all three. The ammo was/is in various boxes of 20-50 counts, in .38 to .50 cal. magnum rounds...maybe a box or two of .300 Winchester hunting rounds. Never have seen any evidence of negative impact/effect...toning, etc...on the coins...have checked thoroughly. Would being in different drawers (same cabinet) have been enough to prevent that...? Regardless, have separated them more recently into different filing cabinets.

 

I feel rather badly that I hijacked a thread here and I apologize to the OP…… This was the coin. When I purchased this one it was blast white. I am a confirmed blast white guy. Now at that time I was getting ready to apply for my concealed carry license and was at the range regularly. Being a former soldier, I cannot put a firearm away dirty so I was cleaning them a lot before I put them back in the safe. And my prize coins sat on the top shelf in that safe. This coin went from blast white to what you see here in roughly six months time. And keep in mind the aroma of gun cleaner was always heavy in that safe. It was Doug that clued me in to my mistake and once he told me, it made perfect sense.

 

Randy, it's easy to do...maybe this was more my fault for my first reply to you...your (my) mind just gets going down a related road and presto...a hi-jack in progress. Nothing intentional I'm sure, it can be a fine line. Heck, I read the forum category definitions the other day and felt sure I was choosing the correct category for my post, but apparently not as was dinged for it (informed it was moved to the correct category). Sorry.

 

The black splotches is what has me concerned.

 

Laugh if you want too but I heard of a dealer who had a pocket sewn into his shorts! Imagine handling his raw toners?! What would be worse, picking the coin up or bringing up to your face using a loop?

The glue used also breaks down over time too, which volatilizes and can react with active metals.
