Having just returned to the hobby recently, I have heard of registry sets, yet didn't know they weren't separating the SF's, which you're right they should, since they grade them as a unique variety. I'd also like to see Whitman recognize them by adding separate lines for them in the Red Book and their albums. This should all happen in time, but the sooner the better.

I totally agree with your logic and insist that we must purge such individuals as they give everybody connected with the hobby a black eye. Go for it! And win the nay-sayers over to our mutual position through continued compelling logic. That's how Thomas Paine won sufficient numbers of the soon-to-be-free colonists over and you have the stuff to do the same.
You are correct, and that is all that matters. Swat this human housefly.

    Statequarterguy,

You are saying that the satin finish coins will be needed to complete collections because they will be considered a variety of the date/mm. In my mind, the only collectors that will be interested in this variety are registry collectors who will only want the coin in the two highest grades. In other words, I don't ever see this coin being worth very much unless it is graded MS67+ by either NCG or PCGS. Even in MS67, the current population is 250/5 with certainly hundreds of thousands of intact mint sets in the marketplace. In a few years, there will be thousands of MS67RD 2008 satin finish cents in top tier TPG holders to satisfy the demand of the registry collectors.

IMO, mintage has very little affect on the price of a coin. What is important is the extant population. If the mintage is low enough to create a rarity even if the extant population is 100% of the total mintage, then it becomes relevant. That is not the case when hundreds of thousands of mint state coins exist in government issue mint sets. To get an idea of how small an certified population of a modern coin must be to drive a price premium due to potential coins extant, take a look at this auction link.

    http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=26091&Lot_No=13250

The link is to an MS66 1952 Jefferson Nickel. The original mintage was almost 64 million coins with a current certified population of 99/14. Numismedia wholesale prices are respectively $70/$220 for MS66/MS67. The reason is nobody knows how many of the 64 million are extant in MS66+. The population of the 2008 satin finish Lincoln in MS67 is 250/5. That population of the 2 year old cent is higher than the almost 60 year old nickel and I promise the extant population of premium gem coins is higher for the cent as well.

I don't ever see the 2008 satin finish coin being worth more than a few bucks even in the second highest grade

statequarterguy needs way out, he's got in hole and cannot find a way out so here it - lets show the CoinTalk spirit here!!!!
How can members help him out - with logic that's how, so I will try:::

The reason this is such a "hot topic" is because it was nothing important to begin with, only the reaction TO IT was important! It was about a guy on eBay trying selling a so called "no P" Lincoln cent for $40 or more.
Ridiculas yes, description a tiny bit leading maybe, price obsurd, for sure.

But what happened - statequarterguy saw something with this sellers ad that inflamed him so much he could not stand still it - many of us know not what that was and may never know. All we know is it really got to him this ad and he went off, now with him going off some of us went off, then he went off on us, then,,, well you can see what happend.

It could go on and on and on but, it is taking time away from true bits of wisdom on CoinTalk - and that's not worth it. That price is too high.
In five years it will matter little if any so lets be glad statequarter is here, be glad Rim is here and bury this post/thread, it really don't matter a bit.
(Sorry I can't spell well, still can't figure out how to get spell check back on here but I will).

To combine the subjects of perceived deceptive tactics on eBay and satin finish coins I want throw this out there. I peruse eBay every now and then in moments of boredom and search 2009 D Nickel or Dime just to see if any have popped into circ. and what ridiculous prices people are paying for them. Now, it really aggravates me that I find so many listings that clearly say nothing of SF, SMS, Satin, Matte, etc. in the title yet when I get into the listing it's creatively in the description. Is that deceptive or is the onus on the buyer to read the auction fully since the BIN and BID area is before the description and a happy trigger finger might find them disappointed at their erroneous purchase after the fact.

LOL, I like your reasoning, Like I've tried to say, let's just agree to disagree. But, I don't know that I want to end this thread, if I understand the credits I'm earning, I'm getting a heck of a lot of them off this post. LOL So, does anyone know how you spend your credits or what they're good for?

You could be right, yet none of us has a crystal ball. I’d say mintage matters a lot when you’re in the hundreds of thousands, not millions or billions for a Lincoln Cent, as well as other series, especially if holes are added to albums – now you have the majority, the raw coin collectors demanding the coin, not just the “slabbers”. I know many will argue a comparison to the 31-S, which has a higher mintage than the 2008 satin, yet probably most of the 31-S’s have been saved and a good4 example sells for $50. So, what does the future hold for the satins? No one knows for certain as not only does history matter, so too does future shifts in collector demand. Being the speculator I am, I get to choose what I think has potential, as do you.

You are right of course, nobody really knows, and we all have decide for ourselves. I do not know enough about the lincoln series to compare the 2008 satins to the 31-S but my overall opinion of modern coin is that none will be considered rare in my lifetime other than some obscure varieties. Coincidentally, that was the original point of this thread that an e-bay seller was representing a simple 2008 satin lincoln as an obscure variety.

Having just returned to the hobby, I sold most of my gold, luckily when it was over 1200, maybe it will go higher, but maybe it won't , but I'm happy with my profit. The point being, I'm getting into modern collecting now, kinda brings back the thrill felt as a kid. And, with all The Mint is doing these days it's exciting - I remember the days of a proof set and mint set and that was it, The Mint couldn't be bothered and begrudgingly produced those. So, may be a lot of the modern stuff won't be worth much, but as with all coins throughout history, there are stars and the modern coins have no shortage of potential stars.

I even agree that he was trying to imply that this coin is an error, but that does not make it misrepresented. He said absolutely nothing that was false and that is the meaning of misrepresent. Could you say it was misleading (the word used in the eBay User Agreement)? Morally, that is possible. A stretch to me, but possible. Legally, you haven't a prayer. As I stated before, this is basically an advertisement and governed by the laws thereof. Implication is used in advertising and is not only legal but pretty much the aim of every advertisement.

Okay - side step. The credits could be used for advertising - but I donate all the credits I earn to jaceravone who will be using them for the coin talk charity drive. See this thread by stainless. Last year it was the American Cancer Society. The link is into the general discussion forum which you have to opt into. I believe Joe will be using them to buy banners or ads for the charity drive.

I wasn't going to say it, but I was thinking you guys need to get a life for this to go on for 13 pages. But, since I read the whole 13 pages I would have to include myself in having to get a life so I'll definitely say nothing that would allude to that.

I'm the OP of this thread and I agree with others, it's time to stop and agree to disagree. There's nothing new at this point and we're just repeating the same two philosophies over and over. There are those that believe, why would the seller state No P, unless he intended to deceive a novice buyer. And there are those that believe in the P.T. Barnum approach to selling, which is anything goes as long as you don't actually state a falsehood. Most in these two camps of thought will never change their minds, so let's stop trying to convince each camp. In hopefully putting an end to this thread, I'd just advice, all note which camp the responders are in, it may come in handy someday should you find yourself in a deal with them. I don't know, is there a way to delete this thread or has it been permanently inscribed for all those who come?

I came in on this late, and should probably keep my mouth shut, BUT...

I was agreeing with your last post completely...until the fourth sentence. You are right, we should agree to disagree. But, why do you insist on attacking the character of everyone who disagrees with you?

I wouldn't want to be involved in a transaction with YOU, because if any sort of problem arose, I'm sure you would find something...ANYTHING, to make it MY fault.

If you go back and check, you will find I have not responded to your last 8 posts. I figured a long time ago that you were not going to answer my questions. As for this thread being deleted, no way. I have been completely civil and you have been nearly civil although, as I warned you, you did get a slap on the wrist for one of you posts (#10). I have no idea if you got kicked off eBay or if you stopped your harassment before they took action. I do know that http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270373004796&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123 is still there so eBay agrees with me.

However, I would strongly advise you not to associate someone's legal opinion with their character. I really do not think that you will find they correlate very well. I have used zero innuendo against your character and I fail to see why you find it necessary and continue to do so. I think you will find that presenting facts win more arguments than assassinating someones character.
