1921 Peace dollar Obv.jpg 1921 peace dollar Rev.jpg I don't want your belly button but I want an HONEST opinion on two part question. 1. should I give this dark 1921 Peace Dollar a acetone bath? 2. Would you send it in to be graded? I'll do what the majority rules. You folks have done me right so far.

An acetone bath might improve appearances......I'd not send it in.

  4. Nice coin! It looks cleaned to me, but if you are looking to sell now is the time. These are going for decent money on eBay regardless of condition due to the 100th anniversary. TC

I agree the coin is cleaned. Especially to the left of the portrait's face on the obverse. Wouldn't recommend sending it in.

If you're curious (I often am) I'd send it into ICG (along with 9 others to reduce the shipping cost) and take advantage of their US Coin special for Cointalk members - it's $10 each, you just write your member name on the form with "Cointalk discount" and I'd also pay $5 to have them conserve it, just to see what's what. That's my two cents, and congrats, that's a neat low mintage coin!

How long would you leave it in the Acetone?

I agree with the others 1) yes, Acetone won’t harm the coin and 2) absolutely no - it won’t get a straight grade.

I have NEVER cleaned a coin. much less acetone. I am sure you'll get a good answer from these folks. They know their stuff.

I don't think it will change it much. I like it as is.

Hell, I soak coins in acetone all the time. If there is anything organic on it, it lifts it right off.

Certain copper or bronze items will get a light coat of mineral oil on them to ward off the moisture and oxygen. Mineral oil is easy to strip off with another bath of acetone.

Never had either of these hurt anything.

My experience is that anything longer than an hour has no appreciable effect.

I soaked a 1926-D SLQ in acetone overnight, then rinsed it in fresh acetone. It didn't have any real effect, but it was neat to do, I'd never done it before - I just followed guidance I got here. Be sure to use 100% pure acetone - nail polish remover acetone has scent ingredients that can be harmful to coins and use a glass container and glass lid - nothing reactive. Here is the thread I posted about my acetone experiment, there are some comments that might be helpful - https://www.cointalk.com/threads/standing-liberty-quarter-in-acetone-experiment.376399/#post-6585696

I’d be more inclined to give her a 10 second dip and a full minute of fresh running water as a rinse.

Distilled water, and a good home, a Waite Raymond wouldn't hurt.

The bad news: there's a fair chance it won't straight-grade if you send it off. Some of those scuffs on the obverse might put it into "details" (problem-coin) territory if you catch 'em in an unforgiving mood.

The good news: it's still a 1921 Peace dollar, and a pretty well-struck example for this notoriously softly-struck date. There's lots of hair detail in the center of the portrait that is not always complete on these. And of course this is a better date.

I for one do not find the toning all that objectionable. One sometimes sees darkish toning on 1921 Peace dollars, and sometimes it can be streaky or ugly. This is just neutral, to my eye.

Acetone if you wish, but leave the darker areas alone. In other words, don't dip it in a coin cleaning solution, if you were even thinking of that. Those darker areas provide visual contrast and give it an "antique patina" sort of look which I think is not unpleasant.

I see no reason to submit it for certification, unless you just want to, and have a voucher or something. It's fine as-is, and would make a perfectly respectable album coin.

Well I think the majority rules in favor of: "1. NO, do not send it in! and 2. Don't clean it, leave it as is." So be it! Thank you again people you may have saved a scarce coin from potential damage since I have never cleaned a coin since I was 8 years old using a pencil eraser on a wheat cent.:eek:

Not bad looking, overall. Has some signs of prior cleaning IMO. I wouldn't send it in. Unless you really don't like the appearance, I'd leave it alone. Natural aging.
