Now that is how to exercise ATTICA! I am all for assuming and condemning the subconscious intent of a post by another member. Mind reading is a worthwhile hobby. It is fun at family gatherings, also. Especially Christmas and Thanksgiving. Especially when I don't care where the turkey came from or how it was killed or who killed it and why, so why should anybody else? Why keep the turkey alive, anyway, if nobody is going to eat it? I am a Samuel Clemons fan.
I remember they were trying to kill off the cent back when I was a little kid in the 1970s, ie about 1974 and the aluminum cent then in 1982 with the zincoln. But I've come to the conclusion that the cent will just outlive all that will predict it's eminent demise - kind of like how people have been trying to kill off Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones or Danny Bonaduce from the Partridge Family. Like those two, the cent has had one foot in the grave for a very long time but it, like them will manage to keep the other foot out of the grave.
Just think about how long the British have been trying. It is a good thing, too, because there would not be any Scotland or Ireland, if it died. Stupid Kings and Queens. They had their chance.
Glad to have it! I was looking at the future of the Cent in an inflationary environment, but how the Cent might continue is equally interesting. Might the Cent go through a period (as in the 19th century) when the mint continued production of proof "for collectors only" issues? I just got back from picking up a To-Go order at Denny's. The cashier actually gave me the stink-eye for using cash! ...and she didn't have any cents. The order was $13.48. I gave her a $20 and she gave me back seven $1 bills and two quarters (she kept the 2¢). I asked if she was out of $5 bills. She gave me the stink-eye again as she traded my singles for a $5. I still tipped her $2. How much more was she expecting for a $13.48 To-Go order? Btw, the meal was delicious!
The moderators are here for a reason. You may not like what they do but imagine what would happen if ALL the threads went political, opinions are like a certain part of the physical anatomy, everyone has one some just smell worse than others. THIS IS NOT A PLACE i come to to discuss politics, we all (ASSUMPTION) know why the economy is so bad and we all have the right at a certain time in the future to change it. CT IS NOT THE PLACE. There is a place for that discussion, use it and not this section of CT. JMO Semper Fi
Think what retail advertisers will have to do if the Cent is eliminated. Brain freeze. However, if it stays, we will be entertained endlessly, by...as example only...the Walmart daily price changes. They have a schtick for every every Cent amount between .01 and .99. They are making billions, jerry! Billions, I tell ya! Math is hard. Think about the Dollar Store that isn't. Think about the fun gas pump price monitoring volunteers. What will they do? What will happen to the across the street gas price wars? "What? I have to lower by increments of 5, now? How much in Riyals is that?"
The three no no's my father quoted. Do not discuss "politics, money, religion." You will certainly open Pandora's box... Respect one's opinion with grace and acceptance, without threat! My opinion only, thank you.
Yeah, guys. It makes me so DARN curious when I see all the red edits, trying to figure out who said what. Doesn't take my old mind long to get...Look, a squirrel! Steve
Sure, agree, but, do moderators or anybody or any other member get to mindread and assume the intent of another member? I don't think so. Sometimes, a duck is just a duck, and when a word or 2 or an idea is presented that can be linked to another possible subject, that is not moderation, that is subconscious condemnation. Every word/phrase can be innocently used for any subject. Threatening is fine, when it is clear and logical, not when it is preemptive firefighting when there is no smoke. As a closing example: you state "....we all know why the economy is so bad ...". Is that not a political statement, in more than one way? is it innocent, or.....? And just to match you: All The Way
They should have gotten rid of the cent back in 1982. However, people are still using them but, normally I only see them going in one direction. And that is a cashier giving you change. I don't see to many people pulling them out of their pockets when buying something. I've always wondered why the mint uses the junk cents in Proof sets. You would think for the cost of a proof set they could use the original alloy. In less than fifty years will we be seeing the cent in our proof sets as just a pile of corroded goo and the ones from before 1982 still looking nice.
I sure hope not. Once it's in someone's interest to end the Cent, I think it's a goner. They may continue for sometime in Mint Sets...making them ultra-valuable.
Speaking of invicta.... https://invictastores.com/collectio...SMGNZc1TzUFSyNrlqwML8quhvKKVyHxhoCKj4QAvD_BwE probably my favorite of the lot, and not a bad price too! \ On the thread subject, my position is clear, if we kill the cent we need to kill the nickel also. both are losers, the nickel is an even bigger loser in fact, and if we kill those, the dime will be right behind it as a loser when they are needing to crank out billions of them ad the material costs go up for the clad blanks. I say leave it alone, or find a cheaper material like copper plated steel for the cents, or nickel plated steel for the nickels. I'm fairly certain doing that would make them profitable again. Since when has Canada doing something before us been a determining factor that we should do it also? LOL How about we increase the value of our money so that a cent or nickel could pay for itself instead rather than abolishing them because it's too costly to make them? McDonalds doesn't discontinue the cheeseburger because it costs too much to make, they raise the prices. event he post office raises prices when they need to, everyone does it. U.S. money doesn't have the buying power it used to, by why couldn't it again? $100 in 1913 has the value of about $4 today. in other words wehat we buy with a $100 bill today cost under $4 in 1913. We should just keep going down this path forever till a $100 is worth 1 cent in buying power? I bet then we are going to need the cents again!
With the cent in place, we will see prices of escalate by a penny up to 4 cents. It doesn't sound like a lot, but, if you multiple the number of purchases made in one day, stores will be able to cash in 1-4 cents on each purchase. In my younger days, when I went to McDonalds or Kentucky Fried Chicken, and others, I had to wait for the cashier calculate how much I owed for my purchase. The cash register was an antiquated piece of equipment. I would always be able to total the cost of my order, with sales tax, before the cashier could finally tell me how much I owed. My wife and my children told me when they were older, how embarrassed they were. Now, they ring up the Big Mac button, fries button, and drink button and then the patron would give them a credit card or currency of which was entered and it would close out the sale with a credit card or the cash register would tell them what the change would be if payment was made with folding money. Some equipment even tells the casher how many of each denomination they would have to return to the patron. Whoops! I digress. As far as cents, I asked the cashier at a dollar store what do they do with the pennies at the end of the day that are in their bowl. Most didn't know, but those that answered thought the manager probably but them in their pocket.
