The three-cent silver, also known as the three-cent piece in silver or trime, was struck by the Mint of the United States for circulation from 1851 to 1872, and as a proof coin in 1873. Designed by the Mint's chief engraver, James B. Longacre, it circulated well while other silver coinage was being hoarded and melted, but once that problem was addressed, became less used. It was abolished by Congress with the Coinage Act of 1873. Please post any 3-Cent SILVER that you have . Here's my 1856 found while Metal Detecting . It's incredible to think how some of these small coins survived without being lost . What was worth 3 cents back then anyways ? The 3 cent Stamp of course . What do you think my coin would grade if submitted ? Heck, post any 3 cent you have !
I got my winnings from a recent auction; one of the lots consisted of 50 old US coins, 12 holed and 38 busts and indians, mostly nickels and pennies. Paid $50 (all told), that's $1 per. and spent the rest of the day CLEANING and examining them. Made a necklace with 8 of the holed coins.
I have Variety 1 and you have Variety 2. Where is Variety 3? The differences are 1 had no lines around the 6-point star while 2 had two lines. And 3 had one line. I think that’s a number of changes for a short lived series. The government switched from silver to copper/nickel as the silver was horded by the public and the reversed was changed yet again.
You know after the US return of the GILGAMESH tablets, the BRITISH should be shamed into returning the LORD ELGIN marbles... . The Phoenix is risen from its ashes, like Pegasus of slain Medusa's blood or Unicorn sprung out the mirror. Mud enbounde lotus, crystal water washes your parting golden petal eyelashes. We share your joyous season, and our rud- der's held to follow your guiding moonflood across the waves, amid the star flashes. Angel of Peace, alight on this smote flesh; may we carry your light, ensconced pearl, beyond the darkest gates of Gilgamesh. Redeemer King, heavenly song of worlds unknown proclaim your majesty, that YES, far, far beyond nothingness' silent whirl. All part of our most proud HUMAN HERITAGE.
Here's my stash of NICKELS from today's hoard; there were only two tiny silver half dimes and a 3c mixed among mostly LIBERTY PENNIES.
