Are these real or really fake?

    Hey all,

Just wanted to say hello to the forum, i decided to join to help better educate myself on coins and collecting. I have been collecting since I was a child, but recently at 24 had the sudden urge to get back into it.

I have a couple of questions on coins I bought today from a local pawn shop. I was going thru his Old coins and came across these two.

This afternoon I did not know about the Chinese knockoffs of these coins but after further research I am beginning to wonder if they are or not?
They are both CC's. Any info would be appreciated. If they are fake and he will not refund me can I take further action?

    Thanks!

They don't look right to me, but no expert here. No luster and the fields look funny. Did they mint an 1896 CC?

    Boss,

Good point I don't think so I haven't heard anything about them. I don't know, I just looked at the coin and it does say CC on them. If they didn't then that's a dead give away that I got screwed.

The 1896 is a fake for sure if it has a CC on it. If you could post a pic of the reverse on the '85 that would help.

The 1896-CC is definitely a fake, because the Carson City mint made its last coins in 1893.

How much does the 1885 weigh? Can you get any close-ups of the CC?

I am assuming the 1885 is as well? Unless anyone has any objections to it?

Did you buy these from the same seller as the $10 slug in the World Coin forum?

No bought these from a local pawn shop he had hundreds of old legit coins. I paid more than $10.00 but I think I got burned from the guy, because if one for sure is fake what are the odd's the other is real and saves the day.

Carson City Morgan Dollars are very expensive (at least in my pocket book) so depending on how much above 10 dollars you spent I might suggest that the other is fake or one hell of a bargin..http://www.mintproducts.com/1885-cc-morgan-silver-dollar-in-gsa-holder.html $629.99 (which after doing a google search, that prices seems about the medium when comparing them to other morgans of the same year.)

The one coin is definitely fake and the other appears to be as well. You can confirm it yourself by weighing the coin. If you don't have scales, just take it to a jewelry store and they can weigh it for you.

Thanks GDJMSP! will do that later today. Will update here. I wonder if I can do anything if he won't refund me my money.

    You can, indeed.

The Hobby Protection Act states that all counterfeit coins must be labeled as such. This coin is not stamped. It is also illegal to sell counterfeit coins with the intent to deceive. He sold you at least one counterfeit coin, and can get in some pretty big trouble for that.

I would be nice about it and everything, but if he will not offer you a refund, you should threaten the following: 1) File a Better Business Bureau report against him. 2) Contact police and file a report. 3) Contact federal authorities and report him.

If he still does not offer a refund, make good on your threat.

By the way, you would have been best off avoiding this whole mess by educating yourself before purchasing the coins. Go to your local library and get some books on coins that interest you, and study them. Find a local dealer or go to coin shows if you can to educate yourself and get some hands-on learning. Then you can worry about the buying.

    Borgovan,

Yes, this will be the way I proceed. I did not know I have been out of the coin loop for a while. Didn't realize that China was producing these replicas. I will also be posting more on these boards and also be attending a coin show coming up this month! Thanks for the great response. I will post the results later today after I get my answers.

    Thanks!

Sorry, but both coins are definitely counterfeits. If you can try to get your money back, the 1885 is interesting though, it's the first counterfeit I've seen with a strong clash mark on the reverse.

Hello Guys, So is it the CC that has been added that makes you believe it's fake. What else is there that you see to look for besides weight. Is it something in the type, These are the TOOLS i need for my coins. Thanks Ron,

    Hello,

Just confirmed that they are counterfeit also by weighing each coin. I have a real Morgan Silver dollar and they weigh about 26.7 grams. These coins are weighing in at about 18-19grams. Will be going to providence to return them.

Let you know how I make out

In all honesty, it's just the look of the coins. I could try and pick out minute details if I had better pics, but with enough experience you can tell just by glancing at them most of the time. The coins have a dull, washed out look. The details are mushy and not quite what they should be. The easiest way to say it is that they just look wrong. Even if one of them had not been a date/mint that was never made.

The weights reported by the owner confirms it of course.
