I totally forgot about Roma's last E-sale. I had put in over a dozen bids, but it completely slipped my mind. Got a stern reminder from Roma to pay my outstanding balance... So I figured okay, probably a few nice lots! Turns out, I won a SINGLE coin that hammered at 24L. Slap on shipping and BP.... I paid $70 USD for this.... It's a great coin but BOY 70 big ones was WAY more than I was willing to stomach for this one. I always try to get a couple hundred dollars worth of coins to make the shipping a little less painful. I would have definitely increased several other bids for a nice little batch of coins. RIP Live and learn.
It is pretty nice (and a big 28mm!) but.... I was NOT prepared to spend 3 coins' worth of money on one...
Many of these overseas auction houses will hold your purchases and ship all at once to save you a few bucks. Roma in particular will and have done it for me when I was often buying a single RR bronze per e-sale.
Well heck, wish I knew that... Already paid up for this one for fear of getting blackballed or something. Will keep that in mind!!
You might reach out to them and see if they'll hold it if it hasn't shipped yet. They've usually been pretty responsive for me
I felt like I paid too much for my similar coin. It was $69 in 2020. It is quite different in style and layout but from the same year (13) and similarly rough. I can't remember why I bought it but it was one of my last coins purchased during Covid. Caracalla AE29 15.48g Caesarea
Shipping a single coin can be costly. Buying more coins you don't really need to justify the shipping is even costlier. Either way, once you have it in hand all pain is forgotten. You pay once, but the pleasure is there for years to come... Nice type. Congratulations!
The pain will pass. It's a compelling coin-- artistic dies, great centering-- begs to be touched and admired. I know you're disappointed in the final cost but don't sweat it. We've all been there .
Take a look at their unsold coins, and see if you can find a coin that can hitchhike with the one you already bought.
It worked! Will combine shipping for the Sept 9 auction which I will (hopefully) win a few more lots. IN the grand scheme of things though, buying more to proportionate down shipping is kinda dumb. Reminds me of the story of the guy who would drive 60 miles every day on the freeway just to get his gas mileage up.
In the grand scheme of things, what about using new, functional money to buy old, obsolete money did you ever consider «smart»?
When the apocalypse begins, my brass coins will have more melt value than modern copper/zinc US coins?
