A 1995 zincoln with a BIE die chip 40 years removed from the very common 1955 BIE. I've been told that die chips like this on modern zinc cents aren't that common? Is this true?
I think the biggest problem is that it's often hard to tell a die chip apart from a zinc corruption or a plating bubble on these Zincolns. This BIE doesn't look rounded like you would see from a bubble, though. And there are no other nearby bubbles or abnormalities. From my inexperienced eye, I'd say it's a valid looking chip. Nice find. My $.02
For the most part yes, this should be true. There are a couple of factors that make zincs cent less prone to die chips. First is the very low profile of the dies, these coins a basically flat and have no depth to them. The second would be a lower pressure needed to strike a soft zinc coin.
Rarer. BIE can occur on any year. Older copper cents are more common though. Here are 3 different 1994 BIE examples from my collection..
