Yes, I am serious. In this case, I am serious. I believe that I was the first person to suggest a $20 UHR (please read the Numismatist letter to the editor. If anyone knows of any earlier mention (and can provide the citation), I'd be happy to withdraw my claim. The "contest" for the Jefferson is independent of whether or not I was the original proposer of the UHR.
Sorry, not trying to belittle your contribution, but I don't see how you could prove it or what good it would do. Has anyone ever been given public credit for suggesting something to the mint? I know how you feel though (just a little). I went back and forth with GMM when they first started making replicas and suggested they do a 1796 mint & proof set. Never even a thank you or acknowledgement from them. I figured at least my suggestion was worth a free set, but nooooooooo, I had to buy mine. lol Often that's how it is, you can have a good idea and if you don't protect it, someone else will take credit for it. If your suggestion was profitable for The Mint, the mint director will probably get a reward for coming up with it.
proof The only proof I have is the actual letter to the editor in the Numismatist. I also have a letter from the mint acknowledging my letter to Moy (but never a reply from him). A letter to Rep. Castle (the guy who introduced the State Quarter legislation in Congress) also went unanswered. When I didn't hear back from Moy, I assumed that the idea was dead. And for certain, a 2007 UHR never came into existence. I was surprised when I heard from Jim Hughes that Moy had gone to the Smithsonian to examine the small diameter MCMVII UHR (Judd 1917). Do I think that Moy took my idea? There is no way to tell. I just hope that he actually read my letter and it planted a seed. While I like my MMIX UHR, I wish it had been made the same diameter as the original $20 St. Gauden's UHR.
I don't care for any of the special labels but some people like them. I don't see how it is a big scam. I think PCGS should be ashamed of themselves for this junk of plastic. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3984.m38.l1313&_nkw=PCGS+obama&_sacat=See-All-Categories
If you are going to knock NGC for trying to market something new, then you should do the same for every other company out there trying to make a profit for themselves. what NGC is doing is just like those stupid tv commercials that you happen to see on tv. I cant fault them for that..they are out there to make a living.
Are you serious? Just because you were maybe the first person in writing doesn't mean you really the first person to bring it up. They started working on the coin in March of 2008. I don't even think Ken read your letter.
I have to ask you guys something. How many here actually agree with calling this "Newest NGC Scam!" When I see folks using the scam word, I think of getting a letter from a lawyer.
First published suggestion of the new UHR? I would also add my congratulations for coming up with the idea, and also for putting it out to the public. Ideas are flashing around all the time all over the world, but at least you put it into the record with your published submission.
Scam = "A is an attempt to defraud a person or group by gaining their confidence." There is absolutely nothing about this that relates to a scam and/or fraud. They are offering something to the public. If the public accepts, they make money. If they don't, they lose a little. There is nothing about that making it illegal. It may be chinsy, cheap, maybe even amoral, etc., but there is nothing fraudulent about it.
Find/Buy/Scam/Buy/Sell I like finding coins. Some folks like to Find/Buy/Scam/Sell/evaluate/procrastinate/horde/order and complete/alter/create~ So many options to enjoy. As for myself I say they can say anything they want. And if you want to pay for it, then it is yours!
Not true! A few years back I was looking for ways to pretend to assemble and order some of my "stuff" of the coin variety. I purchased several newer methods of preventing further damage to my already damaged old "stuff" and that included buying several different sized "archival" holders to hold my holdings from years gone by. I hacked sawed apart my '43's from their PVC tube holders I'ld placed them into back in the '50's and moved some into my own new slabs.:computer: I had fun making up things to print onto their new holders.
Earliest Known Advocate. On a slab of an UHR, the object of the advocacy would be implied, saving words.
