I have been going through rolls of quarters trying to complete all my state quarters. My neck is killing me. I stumbled on a 99 Penslyvania-S. My understanding was the "S" was either unc. or proof. Is this one of those that just for what ever reason got put in circulation?

San Francisco Mint coins today are only proofs, I believe. So yes, this doesn't happen everyday.

Yep, it's a proof, but damaged because it's been circulated.

the correct term is impaired proof if it shows any signs of wear

Proof and Uncirculated coins from the Mint are always turning up in change lately. This is mainly due to the many home invasions, dealer stores robbed, people on the way home from a coin show robbed, etc. The criminals don't take chances on trying to sell the coins so they just put them into change. With this economy, crime is running really high and coin robberies are easy to spend the proceeds from.

I gotta believe that's what happened or some kid got into his parents coin collection for what ever reason.

I got a Delaware silver S a couple of years ago. It made my day.

I bought all the clad quarter sets the other day at an auction. 1999-2008 in the mint boxes w/coas. SHould I hold these or sell them? Not sure why I bought them it just seemed like a good deal.

I'd hang onto them. They're only going to get worth more. If you got them for a good deal than it should be worth it to hang onto them. Especially since they're still UNC. Are they proofs?

Well that may be true, but some collectors get proof sets and break them up for whatever reason and put some of the coins into circulation. One person at the local shop says he does it cause they are not worth is time or money to sell them, so just let someone else worry about them. I can't understand that, but to each their own.

I would suspect he is telling you things like that for the fun of it. At any coin show, dealers place proofs in 2x2's for sale to people that want them for Albums. Not worth his money or time? Just has to be kidding you or he needs some professional help.

I have found 2 clad proofs in circulation since 2006 but both were damaged:crying:. It does make you sad when you find one tho because it could only come from another collectors loss as mentioned above.

My wife got an 2005 silver half, quarter and dime in change at a McDonalds in Lancaster Pa. before Christmas. I was waiting at the table and she came back all excited. When the kid gave her the quarter she recognized it and ask if there were any more. They were glad to get rid of the half dollar, the dime was mixed in with the other dimes in the change drawer. She knew it would make my day and it did. Kid probably cashed in his dads silver set for a hamburger.

Now that the State/Territorial Quarter Series has ended, I've decided to put together a nice BU/Proof set while they're still relatively inexpensive. I figured I'd start with the keys and go from there. A few that caught my eye are the low mintage satin finish ones, particularly the 2008-P's & D's, with a mintage of approximately 745,000, those look like the lowest mintage of the series. I know the silver proofs are also low with similar mintages. Any other thoughts about the series?

I've stopped collecting statehood quarters in 2008. It was a long haul and I couldn't see that collecting territorial quarters was anything exciting.
I don't know want the final mintage of the 2009's will be but I m sure there will be a ton and a half of high grade territorial quarters around for 100 years or more. that's my humbe opinion.

Yeah, I hear that - there are a ton of them. But like the Memorials, the series has ended, so for some reason that makes it more desirable to me. It's also going to be the least expensive it will be to put together a set in high grade and will make a nice display. I have a six year old son that's into them, which is a learning experience, for both of us, explaining what the design represents. I have to look for something that explains what each design represents – anyone know of a good source that addresses all the quarters?

I also like the way the series ended, with those low mintage satin finish coins. I've looked at many and most are real nice strikes with an almost matte proof finish The satin finish coins are actually the reason I decided to collect the series, had to pick up those low mintage satins, with mintages like the 2008’s of approximately 745,000, so decided what the heck, might as well do the whole series.
