A bulletin from NCIC about a major residential burglary . . . http://numismaticcrimes.org/2021/08/09/alert-major-burglary-million-dollar-loss-maui/ Also, the list of lost coins and serial numbers follows . . . https://files.constantcontact.com/f0e00abc001/c4d15cba-a88c-45e9-9ad9-5f5cf31e7ac7.docx This theft took place in Hawaii, and it should be pretty easy to spot the sale of coins from the islands if they were fenced there. Even if they were broken out of their holders, it may not be a great stretch to identify groups of coins offered for sale that would at least be worth the police inquiring about.
Is it this one? 2 Million Dollar Coin Collection Stolen by Trusted Friend https://stolen911.com/2-million-dollar-coin-collection-stolen-by-trusted-friend
A partial listing of the stolen loot...... 700 Platinum Eagles various denominations graded MS69 600 Gold Eagles various denominations graded MS69 4,000 circ Morgan and Peace dollars That's one helluva hoard!!
The third party graders can be of IMMENSE help here if they freeze transactions of these numbers and put vendors on alert.
It could be an insurance scam. That's not unheard of. It sets up or one at that price. Of course we weren't given any real details.
The community can be vigilant for the serial numbers, but there’s no such thing as a TPG freezing transactions of serially numbered coins. Also, more than likely every one of those coins has been removed from its holder. Mine had been when I suffered a smaller, but similar loss.
Another reason to 1)not tell people about your coins. 2)keep valuable coins in a safety deposit box, with insurance. 3)If you must store your coins at home, be very smart about it.
but there should be. When someone comes with a coin on the hot list, even to remove it from the database, they should immediately report it and contact the owner and the police.
Someone comes and cracks out a reported coin, and submits to the TPG the plastic to remove from the database. This happened to us.
I don't believe any criminal would be stupid enough to do that. Are you telling me that someone stole your certified coin, broke it out of the holder, resubmitted it for another grade (same, or different service?), and sent the old tag back in for deletion of the old grade from the population?
It would also help if no coin with a value of $500 or more could be graded with out a reciept for proof of a valid transaction for its aquisition.
