In the last few months I’ve been clearing out my LCS wheat cent supply whenever I go. Usually, they don’t have much, but their wheat cents are a goldmine. Looking through the bin, I started noticing things. First I saw a 1913-S, then a 1926-S, then a 1911-S. (I had just paid $16 for a lower grade 1911-S, dammit!) This time, after counting up their bin, they gave me a bag of about 800 coins. At 3¢ each, I paid $24.

Drove home, poured a few out, and began looking through. Not long after starting I noticed one wheat cent that was quite woodgrained on the reverse. Anticipating another teens or 20s wheat cent, I turned it over. 1909-S. “That’s a tough hole filled in for almost free”, I thought before flipping it again and seeing the VDB. I was in disbelief. I grab my loupe, the dot is halfway between the D and B. Pull up images, mintmark position #4 looks right.

Set it aside and kept looking through. Found a multitude of teens and twenties with mintmark:

    1909 no VDB x3
    1910-S (Dansco hole filled)
    1911-S (replaces Dansco coin)
1912-D x2 (replaces piece of crap in Dansco)
1912-S (I’ll probably sell this one)
    1913-D x2
    1913-S (replaces POC in Dansco)
    1915-D
    1916-D x2
    1916-S
    1917-D x6
    1917-S x3
    1918-D x2
    1918-S x2
    1919-D x3
    1919-S x3
    1920-D x2
    1920-S
1921-S x2 (one of them nice)
    1923-S
    1924-S
    1925-D x2 (Dansco upgrade)
    1925-S x2
    1926-D x4
    1926-S (probably will sell)
    1927-D x2
    1927-S
    1928-D x2
    1928-S x3
    1929-D x4
    1929-S x5
    1932-D x2

And the very last little pile I look through...

What an incredible search. Found tons of non-mintmarked teens and twenties and tons of RB/RD UNCs as well, many of which will become Dansco coins. This might be one of those hunts I never top.

You aren't going to tell them about it, are you?

To all the people who say "there's no such thing as an unsearched lot": yeah, it's probably true -- but some lots are still put together by people who are rushed, or don't know what they're doing, or don't care. Presto: a new "unsearched lot". Or at least, it was briefly unsearched...

I kind of left out a detail.

Last time I was there, they talked about "accidentally" putting a 1909-S VDB into the 300th bag of wheat cents they sold, which they expected to be next week. I think last time was almost two weeks ago now. I guess I was the lucky buyer of the 300th bag...

Well, it seems like the least you could do is name and anti-shame the shop; I think they've earned some good publicity!
