Anyone else think the US Mint should've done something cool with the 2021 Morgans & Peace dollars?

I think it would have been awesome if they did something fun and unique.

Like maybe a certain number of random coins come with a COA signed by the Mint Director (it would literally only take them a half an hour max with no added expenses).

Sure it may not add value to the coin but it does add uniqueness.

Or maybe a random number of coins are given a PF/PL finish.

Just something cool like that would cost the Mint practically nothing but also give that added excitement.

    What do you guys think?

I was disappointed they didn’t have at least one Morgan in Proof.

The real excitement was in the ordering of one........

The most exciting thing they could have done is not to issue hideous looking 2021 Morgan anniversary trash, at a ludicrous price.

While I agree with @green18 ....... I thought that it was kinda awesome, fun and unique (175k - 200k) to have a re-release (or, 'commemorative' if you get butt-hurt about having a Morgan silver-dollar in the year 2021).

    Here's to 2121!

I think they should have had non-precious metal versions minted and included with the yearly mint sets and proof sets.

I've been looking (just looking) at Proof Half Cents lately and saw this one on Heritage...

As I look at this coin, I'm drawn back to the origins of currency. Economies could only grow so large on a barter system so various materials have held universal value over time. Most notably, gold and silver. All that was lacking was a trusted standard of weights and measures...backed by the force of law. That evolved over time to give us various amounts of a metal alloy for given denominations.

When I look at the half cent, I see a round hunk of copper, smooth and unblemished. Then, a certification stamp is mashed into the metal like a fist into a ball of pizza dough. That's what I see, a very specifically prepared ball of pizza dough with its weight and purity mashed into it. It could just as easily be a Chop Mark...or an "NE". The value of a coin is in it's composition, not it's certification stamp.

Over the years, our certification stamps have become more ornate and prideful...conveying not only the purity and weight of the metal, but common themes that binds us as a nation.

I find numismatics enthralling and sometimes forget it's the metal that's the coin, not the certification stamp or the message it conveys. Excuse me while I make another Jack & Coke...

Ok, We understand you don’t like this new mint release. Please quit beating this dead horse. It’s getting old.

Well, in reply to the original thought/question...it would only add/have added additional cost to what many already consider somewhere between inflated and a rip-off.

The fact that they can't ship them immediately is a debacle. They've known they need to produce them since January and they can't ship them until October, these last ones said mid November today. In the mean time you better hope and pray your CC doesn't get stolen and canceled because there's no way to change the card on the order. You will be out. So having a pre-sale in my view was a disaster and will be for many people, they just don't know it yet.

As far as something new and exciting, they don't really do that. I want to see them be able to handle a basic mintage and get them out the door before I'd ask for more. It's a momentous occasion, but the pre-order sales situation is a wet blanket. There's plenty of rage yet to come.

That will be an excellent comparison. I am awaiting a comparison of the US Mint 1921, Daniel Carr, and US Mint 2021. That is a fabulous idea, as it will provide an excellent analysis of the engraving and mint pressing of the three—that would be both numismatically, and historically relevant.

it was done like this completely and totally on purpose, same reason they stalled on the details of the 2 coin Silver eagle reverse proof set until the day they sold off the last of the morgan and peace dollars. they had the silver blanks purchased for the mintage before they announced they'd be selling them. they could have struck them in that time period also, which leaves a packaging issue, as to why they delayed and did the presale.
...or they did the presale, just to do one to see if they could pull it off. That's a possibility also.

the silver eagle RP set isn't "pre-order". there's really no justification to do it, except to see if they can do it and get away with it, and from what I can see from ebay, people selling things 1-2-3 months before the seller has it to ship isn't an issue, at least not anymore, and it's not slowing down the dealers or flippers at all. everyone is taking peoples money with noting to give in return except a promised delivery at a later date sometime in October.

Personally I hope it blows up on all of them in a spectacular fashion, the mint, ebay, the dealers and flippers. serves everyone right for selling things they don't have. Ponzi scheme..... perhaps?
