US quarter designs getting complicated

After doing some research, the Washington Crossing the Delaware reverse design was (is) to be the new permanent design for the quarter reverse. That was until they came up with the notable women quarter program (2022-2025), which effectively makes 2021 WCD quarter the only time in the next 4 to 10 years that the WCD reverse will be used. After the notable women quarter, they are slated to do Youth Sports quarters from (2026-2031). After that, barring any other programs, the reverse of quarters is to revert back to the WCD design.

Starting in 2022 the quarter Obverse is to change too. I do not know which design was chosen (if any), but the list possible candidates is here.....

The 2021 WCD quarter obverse was changed back to the old design (pre 1999 )vs spaghetti hair design. Which would make the 2021 WCD quarter a one and done quarter design.

The new obverse designs bring the dates of the quarters back to the obverse. As far as I can tell.....the new Obverse design has not been chosen yet.

Yeah it's a bit crazy.
I am ok with the different quarter reverses but I'd like a constant reverse as well, Washington Crossing The Delaware in this case. Use that as the base every year and then have the other programs as a secondary mintage. Maybe smaller mintages that "might" lead to more collectors entering the game like the "W" quarters.

I agree. I too would like to see a constant design. Hard to get excited about a constantly moving target.

 

I stopped checking change years ago. They cram too much detail into the designs. Let’s face it, due to the dollar loosing value (on a rapid pace) present day coins will become obsolete, because they will be of no value when making a purchase.
The only way out of this is to issue high value coins, and make them small in size. And get rid of the darned cent!
Finally, bring back the old designs and forget putting people on coinage.

I lived through the State Quarters and all the variations and the ATB Quarters and all the variations. I will not start another multi-year coin program. Before YOU start, calculate how much it will cost you. Three mints (possibly four). Uncirculated, Proof (silver and clad), Reverse Proof and all the other combinations the snake oil salesmen at the mint can think of. Have fun, I am done with supporting the US Mint and all those associated scam artists.

 

The only way I and my kids will collect is from circulation. P's and D's. Nothing else. Not worth the crazy mint premiums.

 

WOW - back in the 90's .... collectors said that US coins were boring

now the mint changes the design ... I guess its too much of a good thing

 

To me......since the 2021 WCD quarter will be the only time it is issued in this state .....meaning..

1. first time date in front since 1999
2. Throwback G. Washington Obverse to pre 1999 design.
3. WCD reverse being 1 st time and last time for 10 years probably.
4. Last time this obverse is going to be used.
5. And I have to go back to the fact that these coins were not sold at all by the mint, all dumped in circulation, which I found odd, and I believe that means that the only S mints for this quarter are the ones in mint proof and silver proof sets, making S mints very rare.

Those factors make this coin pretty unique as coins go. There will not be one like it ever again. It's a 1 year design. Not planned that way I think, but just because of circumstances.

Do you think this will cause this coin to demand a premium in the future?

 

Perhaps. Though I fully expect the mint to change their minds on its distribution/future mintage.

That being said, I have found *one* WCD in the wild since they've been released. I will most likely keep any that I find in circulation unless I end up with a full box.

The future mintage is already determined by law I thought. The 2022 quarters are to honor women, and have a new obverse and reverse.
The WCD reverse is the new official reverse for quarters, but they can't use it again unless they decide to make them along with the new 2022 women's design, which they never have done in the past.

 

They won't start minting the new ones until 2022, at least I don't think.
Is there a mock up of the new 2022 yet? I haven't seen one. Just the mentions of who the reverses will be.
As far as mintage goes, I don't think law determines that. For example, this year the mint made halves for circulation. Pretty sure that wasn't codified in law before this year.

 

I have not seen a mock up, or seen which obverse design was chosen (if any yet). The Fed ordered the halves, I don't think the mint had anything to do with that.

 

To be perfectly honest though, I will collect them because I am a sucker lol. Nothing beyond circulation issues though.
Plus, as the father of a young girl, I like the idea of coins honoring women who have played an important role in our history. Gives her important women to look up to.

 

I was a collector in 1976 when the bicentennial design came out. Other than the Ike dollar we hadn’t seen anything new since the JFK half. It was exciting. Very, very exciting…… Now the changes are so routine, there is no anticipation or build up. Yes, things need to be routine for a period of time so that when we are blessed with a design change, it is a meaningful event.

They need to put famous horses on the quarter. I wonder what they'd be called.

 

Well, after looking at the link and those 11 choices, here's the ones NOT to select, IMO: GW-02, 03, 08, 09, 13, 14, 17. And if they select GW-01, locate the mint mark BELOW the date...not up there in front of his mouth like he just expectorated it. WHY.......WHY must they majorly mess with the obverse for crying out loud...?

 

After looking at the 11 choices, I am once again glad I don't collect moderns.
