Hey all, my forte is Roman, so I appreciate your previous help with learning these Greek Coins. The one I have today is 20mm - It looks to have a dude with curly hair on the observe and horse or Pegasus on the back. Even if you could help me with the city it was minted in would be a good start for me. Thanks!

Here is a hint to quickly learn about coins of any type.

Go to Google and put in "Greek bronze coin with a dude with curly hair and horse with wings." Then go to images to find your coin. Greek bronze coin w/winged horse probably works better.

The members here will ID it faster but then you'll learn little.

This may be a match. I know virtually nothing about ancient coins but this image is similar. Now, what city-state did this come from? ;)

    The Internet is our friend.

Thank you @Insider I never tried that before!

@romismatist - Oh man, I'm behind the times. How do you do a search by image? Okay sweet, I'll look through that resource. Awesome, I really appreciate it.

Ignoramus Maximus Nomen non est omen.

To confuse the issue: I don't think it's Syracuse.
The portrait and Pegasos face the wrong way compared to most coins from Syracuse and the OP's portrait is unwreathed.

I suggest you try looking at coins from Iberia. Since this thread turned into a quiz I won't name the place. :)
    Not 100% sure though.

    Good luck!

Ignoramus Maximus Nomen non est omen.

    That was my guess.
But, like I said I'm not 100% sure. Your portrait is definitely not Persephone (Syracuse). On the other hand, I don't see traces of a legend on your coin...

Xodus, posted: "Thank you so much for the hints. I think I found it on acsearch! I was searching Pegasus and not Pegasos... silly me haha.

    "Is this the right coin?"

IMHO: Not even close! My ignorant GUESS is Syracuse because of the image I found.

I like the idea of ancient coin attribution quizzes! Hopefully, the ancient experts will start to post some. Please start with some really very easy ones so beginners can learn.

Post a coin and ask what city state or post a coin and ask what emperor.

:confused::stop: Why are you guys posting coins that look nothing like the OP's coin we are waiting for someone to ID?

I'll  apologize if highjacking a thread is common in the Ancient Forum.

Please, what is this coin. I should think it is a commonly seen design. I'll also bet a dozen of you collectors here know!

Did the OP find it and the letters under the hors are gone?

Alegandron, posted: "Why are you in the Ancients Forum, Skip? You seem only to pontificate on US coins that are not relevant here."

You deserve to be reported for this post. If I were a moderator, I would take your post and make an example of it to answer your question for all the members!

Nevertheless, I'll ask you if the OP's coin has been identified correctly in Post#8 above. As a rank amateur, I collect Greek coins because they are beautiful. Hopefully in the future, you will allow me to post on "YOUR FORUM."

PS ALL COINS are bits of material. As such, many things that apply to ancients apply to ALL COINS! Understand? :D

    Not funny :vomit:

What's really sad is the misuse of the word "perfuse;" and I still don't know for sure where the OP's coin was struck. :(

    (self edit)

:D (better) I'll try not to stay where I'm :blackeye: not welcome. :bigtears:

Before this thread got ugly, I saw nothing about the OP coin style that made me think of Spain. I still don't. I don't know. The game proposed seems like a good idea but not in a thread that has already degenerated into name calling.
