I voted Proud to see you younger folk enthused and interested in this site! We should always learn from each other despite our respective ages. By the way I'm 56 years young.....:kewl:....cool site.
I voted, 21 here, I wonder if maybe a Mod would be interested in stickying this for research and educational purposes?
well it looks like 21-30 for the win, old enough to appreciate coins, young enough to know how to use a computer
Since your in the Wheaton area, do you go to all the coin shows around this area? As you must know there are 4 coin shows just SoutyWest or Northwest of Chicago every Month, all year long, on Sundays. If you do you would notice that the average age of customers is probably in the upper 50's to 100. The average age of dealers appears to be about 30 to 50. Usually about 95% men. Very, very rarely any kids. Younger collectors are a real minority at these shows. This poll shows one main thing. Younger collectors probably purchase most of their coinage via the internet or mail. Older collectors want to see the real thing so they attend shows. I doubt that there are only coin shows in areas of older people so that couldn't be the reason. Older collectors are to afraid of all the scams and fakes they hear and see on the internet and if you can actually see and check out a coin in person, much better and safer. The younger generation is to engrossed on the computer world and older people sometimes just don't want to take those chances. Would be interesting to somehow combine an age, where purchased, availability of coin shows, coin stores, all in one poll. And if you are in this area you should try that outdoor flea market at the Alstate Arena area this Spring. Lots of coin dealers there.
I do know about the coin shows, but much to my chagrin, I've never been able to attend one. I haven't been collecting very long though, so I expect that this will probably change soon (I hope). I hadn't known that the flea market would attract coin dealers, though, so thanks for the heads up on that.
I was thinking when I saw the "vote" for 90- 100 that it really should read 90- 100+ just so everyone gets a vote. :kewl:
I'm 27 and also in Chicago and I do attend some of the coin shows in the area. I also like to purchase at Harlan J. Berk downtown which is close to my office. I do purchase some coins online, but prefer to buy in person. Coin shows are probably my favorite though because of the selection. Individual shops are naturally more limited on selection. I'm suprised that the most popular age category is 21 to 30, but like someone else mentioned probably has more to do with being a website. If you did the same poll at a coin show the most popular category would be 50 to 60.
