I think some of the metal has peeled away. Which makes it an Lamination loss after strike. Or an Unretained Lamination.
I call this characteristic a "defective planchet." That's why there are laminations, and crevices. There was not enough planchet metal to fill the dies.
Well now, that's cool! Not an error coin, but I found this in a bulk Wheat cent lot in 2006. There was a gob of dirt covering the mintmark. I removed that with a toothpick. Squinted. Got my loupe out. "NO WAY!!!" I shouted out loud. It was the middle of the night. Woke up my wife. LOL Bought it for somewhere between 3 and 5 cents if you average out the bulk bag of Wheats it came in. Sold for $700-ish. My second-best cherrypick to date. PCGS said XF40.
