  3. I lucked out earlier this year when I was cashing in quarters I had hunted. The bank teller told me someone brought in a "bunch of those big dollars - do you want them?" HECK YEAH! I got 294 Ikes that day - many in Mint State condition. What a treat!

And thank you for posting this story.

My father, a career army man, served a second tour in post-war Germany from 1949 to 1952; my little brother and I and Mom were there with him this time. I was 7 when we returned to the states from that tour. We have always been respectful of this great man, thanks partly to my dad's intense patriotism. I was also fortunate to meet and have a short talk with Stephen Ambrose about his Eisenhower biography when he taught at the University of New Orleans more than 30 years ago.

Got one of those infamous "brown ikes" with some decent toning on it! Quite like the thing it has character! Would have loved to buy one in the day new, and watch as it toned up over the years. IMG_2036.jpeg IMG_2037.jpeg IMG_2038.jpeg

It could be dust on the holder. Hard to tell if it's on the actual coin.

Brown box Ikes should have been removed from their holders many years ago. Leaving them in the mint holders causes that ugly hazy toning which ruins the coin.

I like the comment, but I don't completely agree. Many do not have what is referred to as haze. There has been a school of thought, in general, that haze is helpful in evaluating a piece as original.

I have original ikes (and many other series) in mint packaging without haze. Is it any less or more original?

Beauty and acceptability is in the eye of the beholder, I guess. Haze has never been a basis of rejection of a coin, to me. I prefer not enhancing the piece with dipping, etc.

Side comment, I knew a fanatic collector that doctored his coins with urine and then a distilled water rinse. Go figure.

Right...an 50% ammonia and water dip with a rinse in distilled water will get rid of most, if not all that haze. I prefer brilliant proofs to hazy ones...just my thing. I think the urine thing is a little obtuse, but each to their own.
