Anything sturdy. Everyone has their own opinion. :)

See my points before, you don't want any vibration, especially in macro.

    Good Stuff!

I think you got a winning system there!:thumb:

Looks like if you get snowed in somewhere you will have a chance to read all the included literature and please provide us with results ASAP after RTFM.

    Jay,

take a look at the thread I just posted about my pictures. Honestly, all I did was wad up some toilet paper and wrap it on the flash. Those pics were done hand-held, with natural sunlight behind me through a window.

I don't think that the complex setup is necessary.

    Hope that helps.

    Yeah it does.

So you're saying I should return everything and just go with some toilet paper(preferably not used) and wrap it on the flash of my Nikon Coolpix 3100?

I think you are about to become a photographer who likes coins, not a coin collector that takes photos.:p

I have a 2X-90X zoom stereo microscope with a 5 megapixel USB camera in the trinocular port. Lighting is provided by an intensity variable 80 LED ringlight which surrounds the objective lens. Don't have to worry about any shadows with this setup. I can preview the pics 'live' on my dedicated laptop computer as well. It was worth saving up for and cost quite a bit more than any coin I own. I regard it as a once in a lifetime purchase and can enjoy it every day for a long, long time.

With your new system you will be able to deal with the "White Balance" problems. Butt next you will need some current digital "soft Ware".

Well, he's just saying it works... you need to understand how light works in order to understand how photography works. After all, photography literally means 'light drawing'.

Anyhow, in my studio I use both softboxes and umbrellas. They are both methods of diffusing light and shadows are harsh if not diffused. A lot of people use plastic milk jugs as diffusers...you might think it's nuts, but look at the results of these guys, they show real life examples:

Now THAT's what I'm lusting after! Except for the puny 5 meg images:cool:.

I miss my old Zeiss stereo operating scope but that was before "digital" was beyond 480X640 on the 3rd optic. Had to use Kodachrome. (Actually, I kinnda miss that, too.) And that was over a decade ago but was a mere $250,000 or so without the laser options.

I did get to demo one of the newer models once but tended to burn holes in the "subject" because the foot pedal was defective.

pretty much... yes. Unless you just want to spend money. I don't know, Jay. I am pretty much brand new at this, but I went from really bad to good overnight with this technique and it didn't cost me a cent!

I am relatively sure that you have a good camera, so software is about all else you need

    Better Shoes~

Wonderful links, Jesh. ThanX. Love the pollen shot.

BNB~to almost change directions. Having the BEST shoes can not make you the Best runner.

In fact, some barefoot folks still win marathons.

Dedication & the ability to take the pain often render outstanding results.

BUT you DO have some good stuff coming your way, so enjoy/prosper and keep us updated.

Nice camera, that's the one on my wish list. But when's the price going to drop? lol So, which lens (es) do you use for coins?

in Photoshop Elements there is a feature called re-size for web

It makes any picture any size that you want it for size restrictions on forums like CT

You did good BNB. Nice set up. I really like those lights.
If you care to, you can probably view the manual to the camera on the Canon site. Have fun.
