Picked these out of a Foreign coins box today at a coin shop. 1928 and 1929 Norwegian 50 Ore. These two made it 1000 Norwegian coins in my collection from year 1891 to 1990
They caught my eye not just because they were two dates I didn't have, but also the 1929 has the lowest mintage of 600,000 and the 1928 has an overdate variety 8/7. I could look at it close when I got home but whether it's old eyes or wishful thinking, there appears to be a 7. I cannot find an example of the overdate to compare it to, so if anyone can help?
@Stevearino could you please look at the last 2 images? I cannot find an example of the overdate to compare it to. Many thanks
Well, that's certainly interesting. I'm not an expert on varieties at all. A 50 øre 1928/7 isn't listed in what I thought was the most complete catalog: "Handlerkatalog Norske Mynter 1649-2019." There are some overdates listed, e.g. 1918/7 in 2 øre and 5 øre and a "tall 7" for the 1937 10 øre. But there is currently a 1937/6 2 øre for sale on ebay in an NGC holder, so obviously the catalog isn't complete. I've searched auction records in Norway and haven't found an example for sale, but the 1937/6 looks genuine (and NGC thinks so, too). So, whether I "want" to see the 7 under the 8, I think in the last image it certainly seems like a possibility. There's also the possibility that hits to the "8" give the appearance of a "7." I would think that the 7 should've been farther to the right. I'm sorry I can't give you a definitive answer. Somewhere I have a list of several folks on CT who are either Norwegian or collect Norwegian coins. When I find that list I will post your question, as well as some of my own. and include you in the folks I'm trying to reach. Steve
@Stevearino Thanks for your time on this. Numista and NGC have a listing for a1928/7 https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/norway-50-øre-km-386-1926-1949-cuid-1112332-duid-1436623 https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1454.html
And thank you, @expat, for the Numista idea. For some reason it never occurred to me. Two heads are always better than one . That's another example of why I'm a Supporter on CT. Wish I'd found this site about 5 years earlier than I did. It would've saved me from making a lot of foolish buying decisions. Steve
There is a listing with image on ebay that claims to be 1928/7, but no TPG. https://www.ebay.com/itm/284239893226?hash=item422e0492ea:g:NboAAOSwnLFgVxQi
Thanks for that. Although not verified it has the same flat top and distinct corner top right, and the diagonal running through the bottom hole of the 8.
