Would YOU have this 1909 S VDB and 1982 Cap cent slabbed?

Think it would be worth while? 1909-S VDB has some damage.

My 09-S, VDB is damaged and raw. It is actually a very good quality cent except for the rim damage. I wanted it to plug a book with, so raw was fine for me…… We live in an era where far too much importance is placed on the TPG label. If your intent is to market the coin I believe you will cut yourself off at the knees. It will come back with a damaged label and that is all any potential buyers will focus on and beat you to death about. If you are keeping the coin, I would slab it. If you are selling the coin, I would sell it raw to avoid the naysayers.

Interesting thoughts Randy. I've enjoyed most of my coins being raw, but I do have a few choice specimens that are slabbed...including my S VDB. But I'd buy a raw S VDB if the opportunity presented itself. One like the one above would be a fine specimen to fill a spot in the album provided the price was right. I've been waiting on a specimen, not searching in earnest by any stretch.

If you’re filing an album then leave the ‘09-VDB ad is and fill that hole. If graded it would come back details so I’d be inclined to live it as is. I think I ‘d leave the ‘82 alone as well.

SEE? THIS is why I ask you folks. GOOD honest answers. Thank you, I think I will leave both raw. I sent in that questionable 1942/41-D in early June this year and they are still mulling it over. Hope to get it back soon.

seems im right with the crowd here.. Yes to the vdb, the cap cent is a personal choice call... it will sell for much more slabbed but possibly not as much as the cost of slabbing it... because of the amount of just plain "junk" error coins on ebay, they can be very hard to sell raw...

The 1909S VDB appears to be genuine to me. The only reason to have such a coin slabbed is to validate it. If it is worth more slabbed then there is a big problem with the collecting world. I don't think a TPG could add any value to such a specimen.

To be honest. with so many "fakes" out there from China I would be more likely to trust a slab if I was buying one. Looks like I have more soul searching to do.

I bought it from a elderly coin collector about 23 years ago from Alabama. He was selling his collection.

I'd say the odds are good that it is genuine. But, that is just my opinion. You have to be comfortable with it.

S VDB should basically always be slabbed. That said I wouldnt send it as a single coin but would absolutely add it to another submission

I personally wouldn't go near an unslabbed 1909-S VDB to purchase (and I'm not inferring there is anything wrong wih yours).

With that said, I would get it slabbed just for authentication, and not worry about the grade, straight or not. Buyers will buy it for more with the authentication then without.
If you have no intentions of ever selling, your heirs will have an easier time if it's slabbed, as well as avoiding the possibility of being hosed when they try and sell.

To me, it's a piece of mind thing. Even though you've had it for a long time, they've been making (really good) fakes of these for even longer.

my folks wouldn't know a Indian head penny from a Canadian nickel. I tried to teach em but they have no interest.

I would slab the '09 for authenticity purposes and I would put the '82 in a very nice aftermarket plastic slab. Both nice pieces in your collection!
