Got this in over the weekend, my 2nd hippo & Claudius coin ..i've not seen too many of these around, in fact, i believe this is the 1st one... POST YER COINS N COMMENTS PEEPS! Emperor Claudius Ae Diabol, Alexandria Egypt, year 3, 42-43AD, emperor bust facing right obverse, Hippo standing reverse, 23mm, 7.49gms
I have one of the Claudius Alexandria diobols: And some real hippos that I saw on safari in Tanzania back in 2015:
I am still looking for mine, @ominus1 . Wow, cool to have TWO, and that diobol is great. I was at the zoo...
A great coin! I almost bought a Roman Alexandrian coin depicting a hippo a couple of weeks ago from cgb in France -- it's from Hadrian, not Claudius (Dattari 1575, K&G 32.154) -- but decided instead on the Agathodaemon I recently bought and posted. AFter all, I already had one hippo in my ancient zoo, but had no Agathodaemon at all!
