Yet another Prussian coin - 1/3 thaler from 1797-E (Muldenhütten). Talk about well circulated! I wonder what goodies it purchased?

 

Wonder what you could buy for 1/3 thaler back then? Much more than a loaf of bread, I would think.

 

I think you're correct, Ed. A cursory (quick, fast, maybe wrong) google search tells me that $1 in about 1797 is about $25 today. So yeah, I would guess quite a few loaves of bread, soup, a beer, and maybe even a place to sleep by the fire at the inn.

 

I often fondle old coins, like a Roman denarius of Vespasian, and think about those soldiers and the coin changing hands way back then for all manner of units of exchange, food-drink-lodging-pleasure?

Soest - German States - 1742 three-pfennig. Soest was an important Hanseatic League town.

I have it as KM#51. I haven't seen that site before.

 

I have a bunch of those Aachen XII hellers and got into the die varieties. I think the numbers like 94.22 are just from that site, not from any KM book or similar. It would help if I were fluent in German.

 

You are correct, Ed - the ID numbers from that site are unique - i.e., not KM, S, etc. Here's a quick attempt to translate the paragraphs from that site.

Professor Krumbach describes in detail and illustrates 28 varieties of the hellers dated 1794. These 28 varieties consist of 17 dies for the value side [which I would call the obverse] and 18 dies for the eagle side [which I would call the reverse].

In a 1996 update or addendum, 31 obverse dies [date, value] and 18 reverse dies [Holy Roman Empire eagle] were identified. No descriptions or pictures.

Based on the number of different dies, it is suggested or estimated that about 1,260,000 of these coins were minted.

 

More German states! This time Brandenburg as a margraviate (as in margrave) with power of the electorate - to elect the holy roman emperor.

I'll keep us modern but I won't be the one to leave Germany. BRD 1971 five-mark, minted at the Karlsruhe Mint (G - Staatliche Münze Baden-Württemberg). One hundred years of a united Germany! So now, in 2021, we're at the 150. year anniversary.
