Even if it is a coin, I'm sure that its identity will remain a mystery.

Where did it come from, and what is the diameter and weight? Coins were often filed down in the 1800s to re-engrave e.g. love tokens.

I have a George III penny that was filed down and re-engraved for a transported convict to give to their mother. It no longer has any remnants of the George III penny, but the size, weight, engraved date and use as a convict token make it pretty certain.

    George III Penny, 1797

What are the dimensions ? Does it register on a Metal Detector ? Could be a Draped Bust ? Doesn't look like a English 1/2 Cent . Mystery for Ever. :(

Clearly a good conversation piece, it's a keeper, in my opinion. Thanks for sharing.

I agree or maybe a punch out of sorts.

  13. I think it is a filed down coin like John Conduitt said it might be.

    Punched out, never a coin
See the sharp, well defined edge on one side

  15. Could it be a planchet?

    ^^^ This ^^^

The edges are too sharp, too precise for a coin that has seen enough circulation to wear it smooth.

  17. A planchet would be a coin blank. It never would have had a design

Looks like a stamping blank to me. They're for making jewelry. You can buy them on amazon, and even with the antique look this one has.
