I found this in a pile of coins just wondering if these kinda coins are worth saving. I have some others there made a little different on one side. I just thought they were pretty neat coins I think this one took a hit.

That is a German one, minted in Munich. Each country in the euro-zone have their own obverses, often different for each denomination, and regularly produce commemorative issues as well.

I wonder if the Coin Collecting hobby is more or less popular in Europe since the EU coinage overhaul.

If you stick mainly to pre 1999 coinage, I guess it is about the same as it always was.

Are European collectors focused more on the new Euro coins?

I was not for sure out of my ball game I have some different kinds just don't know alot about them. I have a guy that will just give me bulk of different kinds of different countries coins and I don't know if there any value to them or not. Just was curious about it I like the different types some of them are pretty cool coins I have a 1926 Germany coin is pretty nice I like it.

My understanding is that Euro coins have brought new people into the collecting hobby, not unlike what state quarters did in the U.S. A lot of young and/or beginning collectors, I would presume.

There's plenty to keep them busy. As Expat mentioned, Euro coins have a generic side, and a side unique to each member country. Plus, member countries can issue circulating commemorative 2 Euro coins. Germany, for one, has issued many of them.

Are there any EU coins that have become "great rarities"? Are error coins common? What's the rarest Euro coin minted? I found this...

"What is the rarest coin in Europe?
According to the collecting website Fleur de Coin, the rarest of all European coins in circulation is one you're also likeliest to overlook. It's a 2002 2 cent coin minted in France, which had a circulation of just 9,000."

As far as varieties are concerned there are a few very sought after issues. One Country put the wrong date on the die and in the early 2000;s Germany used the wrong map of member states, there are probably more.
Errors I presume happen as frequently as anywhere else as the production methods are pretty much the same. This Italian one came as change through our office recently, a very poor obverse strike and a rotation

I trade with people on Numista in Europe and everyone seems to have different collecting goals there. Here is a list of what seem to be peoples collecting interests there from the swaps I've done:

    - One coin and banknote from each country (common theme)
    - US ATB quarter set
    - Coins/notes with animals/nature on it
    - Weirdly shaped/unique coins
    - Specific countries (because they like their certain designs, etc.)

Hek that reminds me of me now I love the difference in the look. Are cions in a america are alot a like I guess the big change was the 50 state quarters I will not lie to you I did not collect none of them didn't do nothing for me just being honest. I thought it was trying to get people involved didn't do nothing for me actually bore me. One of the eastist collection they ever put out there buy the time the new year come around for the next one to be made you would done have them 10 even the few states that had low mintage I see them all the time put them right back out there. There ant but like a couple errors that they say are worth a little the Kansas state quarters done got it. I have found them in the same shape different words so I don't know why that part of the coin got blew up. The corn on the cob the leafes all you got to do is do a little bit of roll hunting find what ever you need now it being in mint shape might be another issues. Now when West point came out with their little deal that was pretty nice no one can get them not less you are looking for them or buying them off someone that is buying ever one you find I think the price should be a little bit more. I've not sold a one of mine but there not easy to find its like putting a hundred in the bowl it would be harder to find I wish they would lower the count make it really interesting.

Most of the commemoratives are 2 euros, and most of the EU countries put out more than one commemorative per year. Germany has had quite a few including their "state" series, which is wrapping up next year.
